Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Wow. Thanks!!

I'm just tickled to hear some BYC'ers who know BCMs say nice things about him.

He's 9months old.
Yes, he does have some white on his earlobes. Just sort of spotty.
He has feather stubs all the way down to his toe nails, but the girls seem to like him 'clean shaven' and pick at his feet.
Here's one from November from the front. He's filled out and gotten wider across the back and taller since then.

I don't have any recent closeups of his head since he's usually trying to heard HIS girls away from me when I'm sitting in the run. LOL
He has a little bit of copper in his breast, which I personally like. I believe it puts more hackle color on the females. Shank feathering does appear good in this pic. I would like to see a head close-up (when you have time to get more pics of course) and please double check his feet - they appear almost yellowish to me in the toes. If they are yellow, this male should be culled. Also, the white lobe is an issue that should be culled as well. HOWEVER, I have seen some males with a smidgen of white in the lobes at this age, then after the first adult molt, it's gone.

Agreed the feet look yellowish green. Believe me you don't want that..... speaking from experience here.

yeah I was afraid of that, just hoping ;-)
It's funny, the longer I breed, the more I hope for more males than females. Seems that in my breeds, the good males are much more difficult to come by!

canesisters - will you try to get some close-ups of your male's feet/legs and head for us?

Oh I think I'm going to have plenty of boys, probably more than 50% overall. I have 20 young birds from 3 sources. These two were the only ones that hatched from shipped eggs so kind hoped for a pair. Looking at the younger ones I think they are going to run the gamet from too dark to too colored and from lots of leg feathers to almost none. So we'll see in 6 months where we are at.

X2 on the greenish shade in the shank. Lighter feet or pink in them can be the hormones setting in so no worries about that. Is what looks like white feathering in right foot from the flash or is it really light? I think this boy is beautiful and I love how wide his back is and long his toes are and his hackles are beautiful. His eye looks a bit dark in that last pic. The enameling isn't as bad as a solid white ear lobe which I have here.

How might I find any of you attending the NE Poultry Congress??

wish I was going..... maybe next year.

Have Fun all!

Thank you for that very clear explanation Boer.  I think chickens are weird now as I am sitting here picturing their ovaduct painting the eggs, but maybe its ME who is actually weird.

I don't want to focus too much on eggs alone, but you can get a sheen on eggs without varnish? How the heck do you do that!?

Ooh... I will. I have so many people to connect with and birds to goggle over.  I am charging the battery in the camera just for this.  Feels a bit like I am a lunatic but I am really eager.

The lunacy thing about chickens never goes away FYI, ;) ! :D

They are just to much stinkin' fun!
