Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Thank you for that very clear explanation Boer. I think chickens are weird now as I am sitting here picturing their ovaduct painting the eggs, but maybe its ME who is actually weird.

Quote: I don't know HOW you get it, but a couple of my pullets are laying the prettiest eggs with that glossy coating and a good dark color too... I drop them all the time because they are sooooo SLICK

The only ones I drop are the ones I want to hatch....

I know, I am so bad. I wasn't planning to buy anything, just look, like going to Rodeo Drive for Chickens... well, I had a change of heart and now I am going to head for wherever this myserious sales room is and DIE when I can't buy more. I will come see Marquesilla. IDK you would have birds too! Oh boy.

DM, I have a pullet out of your stock. Here is hoping that she lays an eel egg! Get a basket and keep it closer to the nest box so you have less chance of dropping them! :)

I drop them as soon as I pick them up.... I have an egg carton right with me they just fall out before I realize they are the SLICK ones

I put one slick one in lockdown today and almost dropped it..... SLICK SLICK SLICK! Might have something to do with my hands... I have seasonal eczema and my hands are SO DRY, I have no grip with them... I can't open a plastic bag at the store for ANYTHING.... I bet cops couldn't get prints off of me in the winter unless they made me soak them in water for an hour LOL.

Time for neoprine gloves DM!!!

Question:
I visited a friend with Marans that are two years old. Her hens are shaped like ... gravy boats, or viking ships, very deep and heavy. Mine are not but they aren't a year yet. How long does it take to see this development so that I know if my pullets are or just aren't going to get it. Does this answer go to cockerels as well?

The pure Davis (the original ones, not the ones coming via GFF) were known to be larger bodied, with that nice, "gravy boat" underline. I wonder if that's where her line originated?
