Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Hi, Chad - it's tough to see in the picture what sort of comb she has - is it a single comb? To me, she looks like a Black Copper marans. Make sure the comb is a single. Sometimes, the females have very short combs, not tall/large like the males. When I clicked on the photo to enlarge it, it DOES appear that she's got a yellow cast to her legs...is that correct? If so, that would be something to breed away from - I would personally not use her for breeding if she's got yellow in her legs. Her eye color, shank feathering, and hackle color look good. (personal opinion here).
Hey Wynette, to me the leg looks green! Just goes to show that all our monitors are different....

Other than iffy leg color, looks good to me...I wish my pullets had that much copper hackle color....always an issue with mine....

Out of 9 pullets I'm running on for this year, only 2 so far have hackle color and one of them has a crow head....argh....

It drives me crazy when those heads pop up. Got 6 cockerels with some promise though yeah!

I agree about monitor calibration heck I'm a photographer. But I checked the legs last night and almost cried it was yellow barely but it was there. The rest are fine. Now I'm worried about the comb and wattle what do y'all think?

Yep, it's always such a balancing act. I culled hard this spring, and removed any potential breeder femlaes without hackle color. It hurt to do so, as I had a couple that had VERY nice type. But, I'm at that point now where I have to make some difficult decisions to move forward. Oddly, I hatched several with waves in the front of the comb, which has never been an issue for my line. So...off to the layer pen they went. Seems like I get one thing resolved and another pops up. Sigh.

What is it in the comb/wattle that you're concerned about, Chad?

Eon, any splash Marans I have ever hatched out, was yellowish white at hatch. I finally sold off all my blue coppers...too much work...

Or are you saying, the eggs were supposed to be of the "white" variety and you hatched out this wrong color?

Sue, This blue with some cuckoo markings hatched from some pure white Marans eggs from north eastern Ohio. Kim, had one of the Genetic experts comment on this happening before on here. His wing color is not as yellow as it shows in this picture. I need to get Wynette a couple of pictures so will put them in the light box for better lighting. Sometime this weekend.

I thought that might be it after I typed the first sentence of my reply...

Hi. New to the site and new to marans but not new to chickens. I have some that are 11 weeks old. When do they get there copper feathers? Mine are all black. Do I need 2 worry about some white feather tips on them? Sorry for all the dumb questions.

I would not worry about the white feather tips until they complete a full molt. You should start seeing some Copper appearing especially on the males, the females are slower at times. How about a picture.
