Black Copper Marans discussion thread

We got the birds for eggs and I didn't want to go into breeding and hatching and all that expense, because I would go wayyy overboard. (Don't understand what my wife is talking about) But I have these two I awesome could be a breeding pair. But now she is laying and the grandkids keep bugging me about chicks... So I'm thinking about it. I also saw that those in the know were giving feedback on the birds people that people posted. Wondering about the quality of my pair.

I'm noticing some middle toe feathering on this day old chick. If it's a K I may keep him around to cross back to my girls with less foot feathering. Gotta love the babies.

I like the foot feathering on these two and your boy looks nice and broad, pic one shows a nice low tail set, but pic 2….I'm not too sure about ( 45 degrees is what you're shooting for). Having said this, the comb would be a deal breaker for me. I would not use this boy for breeding Marans. Although if you're attached to him and you've got blue laying hens, you could use him to hatch out Olive Eggers.

Walter is very large. Everytime I pick him up, I remind him that he has very nice drumsticks. Are you talking about the size of the comb? It is scary big and still not fully grown. Is it supposed to look like a glove being inflated from inside to out?
You are the 2nd person to talk about olive eggs. I have these 2 girls;

The girl on the left someone on BYC thought might be an EE, And I don't really know what breed she is. The girl on the right, an Ameraucana, I'm still waiting for the first eggs from both of these. Should be any day now.

I can't tell from the picture, but some traits of EEs are green legs, pea comb, puffed cheeks...umm that's all I can think of. As far as the comb goes...I believe, in general, you want it to weight less than the rest of the bird. ;) Seriously, the size is amazing - way too big. The comb should be five points, held upright (no flopping - which I see on your pullet too) and your boy's got at least one sprig that I can see -a DQ when showing. Sorry. :/

I can tell you 100% both are Easter eggers pullets. lots of people sell Easter eggers as Ameraucanas. sorry if you were mislead.

Thanks for the info, I rescued these two on the night I bought 5 chicks for the first time ever. The new chicks I know the breeds, but I didn't remember what kind of pullets the lady said they were but I think she was a few feathers short of a good pillow... This pullet is another breed I'm not sure of;

Sorry for the blurr, the only time they stop moving is when the hawks call out.

looks like a rose comb. is it a wyandotte? leg color is not right though.

This is my Walter, he is 19-20 weeks. His comb is about half his body weight, it's big and thick. This is Mrs. Walter, just started laying. First 2 yesterday and a third this afternoon.
Aside from the comb he seems to have wry tail. Granted, I'm guessing from the picture. The BCM Female looks to have copper in the chest or some form of shafting. I'm looking from my phone so I can't be certain. I do agree with others you shouldn't breed them. That's why I asked your intentions.

I'm glad I found this thread, we have 6 - 5 week old Black Copper Marans and we were worried about a little white on their wing tips. We have two cockerels, we think, and one is getting some pronounced copper hackles (cape) but the other one is not yet. The pullets, we think, are black with some light green sheen shining thru the black and of course a little white on the wing on the tips of both side of one wing feathers. It's only about one feather that has the white tip. The pullets show no sign of copper at all yet. We could be wrong about which ones are the cockerels though, we lost one in shipping and we think it was a pullet. Two of them have more cone than the others and more waddles, that's why we think they are cockerels! Relaxed now cause they have leg feathers and nice to know the white will come out in the first molt! Thanks for the info! By that description we have pure breed copper marans! Also needed the info about giving any clean legs away when they have chicks if any should up!
