Black Copper Marans discussion thread

My 4 week chicks had white wings and I was stunned and sad....but I was told it would grow out...I had to move them the other day and they were 6 months old...looked all over for the white feather but all gone and they turned out to be superb hens. Sure glad I listened!

Hello all! I am picking up my first three BCM pullets tomorrow from a small local breeder to help her with her breeding project. I hope to post pictures and get some insight on my new girls. My rooster won't be arriving until spring. I have been waiting 3 long years for this breed and I am so excited to learn more about BCM.

I'm glad I found this thread, we have 6 - 5 week old Black Copper Marans and we were worried about a little white on their wing tips. We have two cockerels, we think, and one is getting some pronounced copper hackles (cape) but the other one is not yet. The pullets, we think, are black with some light green sheen shining thru the black and of course a little white on the wing on the tips of both side of one wing feathers. It's only about one feather that has the white tip. The pullets show no sign of copper at all yet. We could be wrong about which ones are the cockerels though, we lost one in shipping and we think it was a pullet. Two of them have more cone than the others and more waddles, that's why we think they are cockerels! Relaxed now cause they have leg feathers and nice to know the white will come out in the first molt! Thanks for the info! By that description we have pure breed copper marans! Also needed the info about giving any clean legs away when they have chicks if any should up!

Just remember if you breed, type trumps little things like leg feathers and eye color and the like. Those can be improved or in the future. If you have a bird that is poor in type everything else will be an uphill battle. The birds body and structure is the foundation!

So I picked up my birds today. They each have one half white feather on their wings. I'm a little disappointed by this. They do have decent body structure and have the feathering on the outer toe which I was impressed by. I'm not so certain I want to breed with this stock anymore. I got a good price on them so I guess they will just have to be additions to my backyard flock for now. I will try posting pictures tomorrow and get all of your guys' input.

It's quite normal to have white feathers when they are young.
