Black Copper Marans discussion thread

No... they look like whiskers.... they are very fine, like hairs, Six or eight per bird... they look like feelers. I have never heard of it or seen ot ever. They are good looking birds. I don 't know what they are...;This cushion is it on the back or under the front... my birds are all poofy under their rear quarters.

Cushion is a hump in the back near the tail. It takes away from a nice flat topline.

I processed a Am. White Bresse this past week... it had more hairs on it than any bird I've ever seen. Since your Black Coppers have it too, maybe it's just a French thing!

Can I get an opinion on my Marans roo? I posted a pic of him here www.backyardchickens.com/t/830647/not-much-copper-on-this-marans-roo#pos

Do some Marans just not get copper? Is his lack of color because he came from a mixed pen?

Like I said in my original post, I'm using him for Olivers, but I also ordered another batch of FCBM eggs from the same person because I really like the ones I got with Big Boy's hatch. I might end up running a pen of Marans to provide some color contrast in my egg basket.

Thanks!

not all coppers get copper coloring. mostly is see it in pullets, but roos are.HARD to get the right colors in.

Stacie Frost The chest should not be solid black. The standard specifically calls for "parsimonious red spotting on the breast".

Can anyone tell me if this statement is true or is it stated that the chest should be solid black or have "some" copper ???

statement was made on a facebook thread and honestly I must get the APA Standard Book and read it for myself,,,, just looking for some clarity !

Could someone supply a link to the Marans standard so we could read it online,,,, having trouble finding the official standard.
The American SOP calls for a black breast, I infer that is the ideal.

"
Breast: Solid black or with a few copper spots. Not laced."
