The chest should not be solid black. The standard specifically calls for "parsimonious red spotting on the breast".


Can anyone tell me if this statement is true or is it stated that the chest should be solid black or have "some" copper ???

statement was made on a facebook thread and honestly I must get the APA Standard Book and read it for myself,,,, just looking for some clarity !

Could someone supply a link to the Marans standard so we could read it online,,,, having trouble finding the official standard.

I picked this pullet up yesterday along with a Black Copper pullet. They were both supposed to be Black Coppers but im thinking this one is a Black Sex Link. Any thoughts?

You are not alone. I am having trouble picking a good one this year. I have 3 males from my stock from this year and trying to decide on them. One is a big beefy cockerel but has several tail feathers with white in them. Not solid white, maybe 1/3-1/2 of the feathers are white. I was actually carrying him to the garage the last time I did some processing, then had second thoughts and put him back in his pen! I am so afraid that white in the tail will carry forward, but he sure has some nice size. I will try to get some new photos of him and post.

Then I am down to 5 cockerels out of an original 14 I got from another breeder this year. I am not happy about any of them but feel like I need to keep at least one! Some of his pullets are turning out with really nice copper, better than I have been getting, so there is some good. But the males----

Are you going to the Tucson show in November? Going to enter any birds?
