Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Don, my preference for the femals is as yours is; some copper, but they do not have to heavily coppered. I choose more for type, but will not use a solid black female. I have been breeding Black Coppers for almost 8 years now. This year was the first time I used a mahogany male; I used him with a mossy female - ALL offspring was mossy. I also used him with a "regularly colored" female; those offspring were mossy, as well (by this I mean mossy feamles, and males with too much color in the breast). These were the only two I used, so I can't speak to using this male I had further. I'm glad you had (apparently) better results than I did!

I will try to get pictures of the offspring this weekend.
Nice, that is similiar to my results. In using a mahogany male with hens with average amounts of copper,I got right at 50% of the offspring that were mossy. Those were used to eat or as laying hens. When breeding the other birds at maturity I was able to get the desired amount of color in the next generation of offspring.

Thanks but all I can take credit for is finding out who the owner/breeder was at the show, asking her if she would sell him to me, coughing up the money and buying him, his Dad and a full sister :) (who I did not really want!). It was one of the best things I could have done though to make progress, I was getting no where and the Dad (Mahogany) has been a great asset as well.
Zanna, recognizing that he had good potential for you is half the battle - good on you for being tenacious, even if he did cost a pretty penny and you had to take his sister in the deal!

Zanna,

is there any way to find out who is the owner of birds you see at a show? I was at the inverness show (central florida breeders assn) on saturday and i would have liked to know who the owner of the marans was. There was only one exhibitor with marans, it was really interesting to see the show birds in person..!!! gives me better goals to aspire to. These ones had very heavy leg feathering, much more than mine do and they were slightly larger as well, but i was interested to see that the blue copper female there had no copper showing either

Most shows provide an exhibitors list that corresponds to the numbers on the coop tags.

yup, yup! You can ask for an exhibitor's list from the show secretary. They're usually free; however, I've been to a few shows lately that charge for them (they are cheap, like $2). They'll show the exhibitor name and address, but not the breed; so, when you see a bird you like, mark the breed next to their name on your list. Also, simply hang out near the cage of the bird. You'll likely be able to find the owner that way - introduce yourself, and ask some questions about their birds. It's a really good way to get to know the folks showing your breed!

From what I can see in this picture this male would be considered to have Mahogany color. The Mahogany on the Hackle will very seldom have very much in the way of a Flame.

The mahogany a very valuable when trying to breed good dark Copper colored hackles and saddles. This male also has the Dark Slate legs associated with Mahogany Hackles.

Would anyone be interested in how to breed the Mahogany colored Marans into the BC and what color of female to use with them ? Will post if there is some interest.

absolutely!! :)

Thanks Don ! for touching on the Mahogany male breeding strategy. I guess you overlooked my other post question about utilizing mahogany males in breeding programs.
I have another, darker truly Mahogany from eggs from Ernie that I am considering using also, he's very slow to mature, but, recently is coming into his own a bit,,, he's very different from most of what I have here, but, there are things about him that I think might turn out quite nice.
thanks again,,,, any further input would greatly apprectiated.

Just so everyone knows. It is absolutely normal to get BC, Mahogany and wheat from the breeding of BC Marans. This was the reason they could not go into the APA as Brown Red like in France.

I try and use Some shade of Mahogany when choosing the male to be used over the BC females.
