Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Hi
The price is great. I am sorry you are a 8 hour drive from me.do you mail eggs
No one around here has black Cooper Marans.
Even 6 eggs would be a start

Hi!
We went back to the breeders lovely farm, and picked a different roo.

Since our last roo was much too coppery, we attempted to choose a new guy from what she had available. Due to two very kind BYCers, we had a list of things to look for this time. BYCers are the best!

He does have some faults… (don't many?) included are the obvious neck hackle ticking on tips and gray? ear muffs (is there a different name for those?)

I attempted to focus mostly on body type, thick, wide chest and hips, low tail set, even back color and medium slate colored feathered legs (His legs are not long). He is one year old, and currently weighs 7 1/4 lbs. He had his last comb tine pulled off from a different roo at the breeder's place. Is there any other concerns I need to watch for with breeding him?

Here are his photos:

Here he is at full attention. b(He's a bit less dark on hackle.)

Here he is in a relaxed state.

Back view (he is more copper and less gold than this photo.)

Front view- he kept moving. Hard to get a photo straight on. He also has less gray in fluff- sunlight hit the feathers.

Hackle ticking up close on tips. Again, he's less gold, more copper.

I can take closeups or other photos if needed.

Could anyone suggest a strategy on dealing with the ticking? Or is this somewhat straightforward?

What would be his ideal love connection be?

I just found one of the pullet/ younger hen girls who I believed had a good type, has some mossiness in the sun- this girl would be a definite no, right?

Any thoughts are appreciated!

HI
I am looking for about 4 BCM "girls only please" :) I am located in WI. I don't mind chicks, but would prefer a bit older. I ordered chicks last year and I got 1 hen... maybe 2 out of the bunch. I have not seen a dark brown egg for months!!! except for today.........I finally got 1 today!! :)
I am in WI but travel to MN and IL for work.
I would really like to try and get it right this year!! :)

I like :), i don't know how to deal with the ticking though, if it was me i would pair him up with some of my nice females and see if you get ticking on all of the babies or just a few or none?? Also, maybe you will get a cockerel who looks like him but without the ticking.

Please can you give some advice about this roo? My back up roo died last month and I have been offered this one. Have only the one picture so far. Any advice will be appreciated, thank you!

There's something about this male I don't like, can't quite figure out what. I think it is his overall body build. In this photo, he looks too squat front to back and maybe it is the way he is standing, but his neck looks short. Is he scrunching his head down? His back could be longer and tail set is too high. Looks like he has decent coloration on hackles and saddle, feet and shanks and nice level wing carriage. So some good and bad. I understand the difficulty if you have lost your main breeder, so if you go ahead with this one, I'd make sure to breed him to hens with long backs and low tail sets. Make sure he has no comb sprigs, can't see from the photos. You definitely don't want to use him if he has sprigs.

thanks for your feedback Desertmarcy!
I have just been sent a video of him. His neck was scrunched down, he has a better carriage than that. His tail is set a little high, and he has a slightly curly toe (and too many points on his comb) But overall I think he could do as a backup - I like his body size and in the video his proportion is better balanced overall - I will go and have a look at him.
Sorry I don't have the technology to put the video in - I object to having to join Facebook to put it on here.
