Black Copper Marans discussion thread

The experience I have had  is the chicks that  really start to get copper early, then they will  have too much copper. Usually excessive on their chest. If they start to get color at after 3 plus month, and if after 6 months is good.  I have a pullet that is 12 month old and she had maybe 4 copper feathers on her neck at 8 months and now has stunning copper around her neck.

But if you aren't breeding for SQ, and just want eggs and not breeding, then copper anywhere is fine. Depends on what you want the Marans for....

I think they are beautiful copper or a little red. I don't breed them. I like the color of there eggs
I have different chickens to have color in my eggs. But I like the marans the best
Does any one in M O have marans

Hey guys I got some BCMs at an auction. I'm sure they are not show worthy (which is fine) but wanted to see what y'all think.

Hi, abmaddox - kind of difficult to tell from the pics, but they appear to have nice shank feathering and in general, good color. The cock appears to have a bit of a halo, but not the worst by far that I've seen. His back is quite short, and he lacks overall physical balance but again, I've seen worse.

The females appear to have eyes that are a bit dark, and the topline (back) angle is not to SOP on any of them. But - they're definitely, from what I can tell, purebred Black Coppers! I hope you get an ample amount of lovely, dark brown eggs! Enjoy them - they are a wonderful breed that I simply cannot say enough good things about!

I'm sure that once they settle in, they'll give you some nice eggs. It takes a few days for them to get comfortable in new surroundings.
