Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Quote: In your case you KNOW where your whites came from. If you breed your white back to the sire you will get about 50% whites and 50% coppers Carrying Rec White. You would need to keep them separate as you really don't want rec white hiding in your copper because it will pop up FOR EVER down the road.

Any luck finding the hen?

I think so. Waiting for the next couple of hatches to confirm. Problem is I lost the stellar young BCM cockerel...and the rec. white carrier is all I have right now for BCM. A good cock is hard to find!

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE..... that is why we have to grow out so many....... I need to call the roo guy.

Howdy everyone. It's been a while since I've posted, but I do window shop regularly. My daughter has worked very hard on her 4-H project and was able to breed & raise these pretties. We went through 5 roos, many accidents, a crazy live & learn 2013, and about most anything you can image to get them! But we think it turned out well! Her 4-H business project/ poultry project website is www.gabeyssmartchicks.weebly.com if you want to visit our blog & see pics.

This Que- he is our cockerel hatched in 2013. We never showed him this year because we were too scare of loosing him. But he probably would have done well.

This is Que, Flambe', & BB's mom- DeliCountessa. She took reserve Continential at the Stockton, CA APA-ABA/ PPBA 2013 Show. She is being line bred back to Que this season. We are pretty hopeful that we will end up with darker eggs as well as all the other plusses. She a little too light on the egg color for a Maran.

This is Flambe' - she is about 8 ms. now and has just started looking a "plump". We noticed this final Maran feature happen in the 8th month & not really much sooner.

This is BB. We are hoping she will replace her mom this fall at show.

That's about it for us. Love to hear your thoughts!

Hey- saw this and thought I would weigh in. Eyes should be yellow/ orange with a nice round pupil, no starburst or irregular patterns. We had almost all of the chicks out the a Cottage Hill line end up with the "Star" mix eyes and they are not a "standard" for the breed. If you want to be picky- it is strict DQ in show and is a hard trait to breed out of your line. As for big eggs .. . that is always a plus. Just a Feeding TIP: I just heard this year that adding Oats to their feed (cooked oatmeal) will give added calcium & iron to the birds and help them lay & support large eggs. It has worked really well for us. And what they eat, is what you eat

Have fun with your lovely chucks!

CT, your "BB" hen looks nice!

I don't know that I'd breed her to QUE, though. Do you have any other males you can use?
