Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Does anyone know where I can get Bev Davis hatching eggs or any that are really dark? So far I've contacted 4 or 5 breeders and only 1 or 2 have responded and they don't have hatching eggs and don't ship chicks. :/ I'm mostly interested in dark egg layers for my laying flock but I value correct genetics as well.

I guess it depends on how you define "good" and what you are looking for. I have not had any of her stock until now, so I can't really say from personal experience and mine are still chicks. However I got them from a guy who is selling her line for her and he has been very upfront with me on pluses and minuses of his various lines. I got some of his line that he's been working on for years, some Bev Davis chicks, and some Little Peddler chicks. What he said was the Davis birds lay huge eggs and very, very dark. Bev has put a lot of emphasis on maintaining that dark egg color. But he said they aren't as much up to SOP. I think every line of Black Coppers out there is going to have some issues. Some have more than others, for sure. Regardless of who you get them from, the Black Copper Marans still needs a lot of work to get consistency in the offspring. There are a lot of culls. Hatch many, keep few.

Okay, all I am really looking for in a black copper maran is the egg color. So I am very happy to hear that the Bev davis line lay very very dark eggs!

Marans. Always with an "s" on the end, even when singular. Although when singular, the "s" is silent.

Pet peeve of mine.

If you're looking for dark eggs, or the pure Bev Davis line, I suggest joining the FB to "Marans Mania" group. Many of the finest breeders around the country are there offering eggs or started chicks/ pullets/ cockerels. You may even find a breeder close to your area.

Also, suggest joining the Marans Fanciers group page for additional good Marans education and conversations.

@ladycat here on BYC has EXCELLENT stock.

She has stellar shipping practices. She shipped eggs to me here in Alaska, and I managed to get 8 out of 9 Marans eggs to hatch. Her stock are I think 1/2 Bev Davis, I think she got a rooster from Bev Davis... anyway, you can just ask her.

The chicks I raised up have the most lovely dark eggs, I can't tell you how happy I am with the egg color from my hens.

They are not perfect to SOP, but the shank color is perfect, there is NO white anywhere, and I don't think that there is any wheaten. It would be easy to breed these birds up to SOP.

Here is her for sale page on BYC

Thanks so much!! I will definitely get in touch with her. That's a Fantastic hatch rate for shipped eggs! :thumbsup

Here's an update on the questionable chick, Richard Sherman. The original verdict was cockerel from experts here.

I've been told that Marans from Cackle mature early and look scary/roostery at an early age, but I've got my doubts still.

No crowing yet, and I've included a picture of the feathers if that's helpful. Still thinking cockerel?
