Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I'm looking for a new Marans rooster. If any of you have one to cull and are driving distance to the Seattle area, let me know. I will be using him to cross with Legbars to produce olive eggers. I am concerned about egg color and not form or feather color. I am not breeding Marans. The older the better - vaccinated for Marek's would be a plus. Thanks!

Will have one in another month or so when I am done with him in the breeding Pen. He will be two years old this year and came from a dark egg of my breeding. I am about an hour South into Oregon and don't think I will be heading North but have family in Vancouver, BC and they may make a trip down or us up at some point. I don't vaccinate but he was raised with some Turkeys.

I just lost my beautiful black copper Marans hen to a bobcat! So, I am one hen down! I am looking for a Ned hen. I found a breeder where I live, but I don't know if their blood line is good. Is the Bev Davis blood line good?

Its really not that simple...once you get one generation away from the actual line originator (in this case Bev) all bets are off. One has no idea what else went in to subsequent generations. People use the term "line" very loosely and it really comes down to asking lots of questions and getting help from experts if you arent sure how to proceed. There are some really competent and honest breeders out there but many others have no clue whats in their birds and even if they mean well dont have the knowledge or experience to selectively breed to SOP. This is a tough breed and if you are looking for anything more than dark eggs you will have to do a lot of due diligence before making a selection... and then have a little luck. all this said, Bevs "line" is known for large, dark eggs. Birds are typically large and often have little or no copper on the females....

Yes, I have a roo from her. No I am located in tucson arizona.

Oh. I understand. You had a roo and a hen from that line I assume? Did you see the Bobcat?... they are very rare to actually see one. Although there was one in Florida recently trying to eat a shark.

.... Bev Davis has a very good reputation among Marans people. Of course, I suspect some people use her name in vain to make claims that their birds are from her line when it might be four or five generations since the birds came from her. One thing about a bird from Ms. Davis is you can assume that there is nothing crazy added in there... (yellow skin, green skin, no feathered legs...etc....)

I myself would like a roo from someone like that. But they are not easy to come by. And what some allude to on here is that even a good line can throw alot of uncorrect birds. You need a hen for that rooster.... I cannot help you as I am in Macon Ga. and my birds... I have no idea as to their provenance although they are assuredly Black Copper Maran.

No, we didn't see him. But there is a lady in Phoenix AZ that I got my BCM roo from that is a Bev Davis line. He has beautiful copper all on him, and he as the feathered feat. If you want, I can give you the name of her farm, and her website. If you don't live close by, she also ships chicks.

We hatched our very first set of French Black Copper Maran chickens this weekend. We had a 100% hatch rate! So exciting!! Of our 7 eggs, 2 yellow chicks hatched. The rest are black with black beaks. The yellow chicks have yellow beaks and brown markings on their backs. From what I have read so far, these may be Wheatens. I've never heard of Wheatens before now and I just wanted to get a little more info about them. Why did my Black Copper Maran eggs hatch the Wheatens? What would cause this? Are they Wheatens? Thanks!

I am also in Tucson and bobcats are very common here where I am and not at all rare to see. They become habituated to humans and act like they own the place. Last year, I was photographing some chickens in one of those portable folding dog exercise pens in the back yard. Intent on what I was doing. My partner came out and informed me that a bobcat had been standing about 20 feet behind me watching...waiting for a chance for a quick grab and run, no doubt. Another time, I was building a new pen near my macaw's outside enclosure, which is 8' high. All of the sudden, he started screaming bloody murder. I turned around to see what all the ruckus was about, and here was a big tom bobcat sitting on top of his cage and didn't move at all until I started toward him, then he jumped down and walked across the yard as casual as can be.

@Ebove06 I have plenty of Black Copper Marans hens for sale but none are what I would consider breeder quality, they are just extra layers. If they are excellent breeder quality, they do not leave my farm. I have 5 different bloodlines of Black Copper Marans right now. My own line, another farm's line, Bev Davis, Little Peddler, and Logan. Have you been down to the Pima County Fair? The open poultry show is going on through today (4/19). The Marans shown there are all mine.
