Ok, marans experts- at what age can you usually tell males from females?
I have my very first BCM chick this year (unfortunately just one- hoping to get more next spring!)- he/she is 2.5 weeks old, feathering out very quickly, but comb and wattles are also developing quickly (compared to my orpingtons) I'll keep him/her either way, but I was just curious when you're usually able to tell![]()

I kept 2 young roosters last summer out of a group that a hen hatched out mid to late summer. Going in to winter I was beginning to think they would both be all black. It took a long time before the colors came throughI have 6 cockerels (hatch date 3/5/15) and of the 6, there are 2 that are showing no copper on their heads or anywhere else. The others are all showing some amount to a lot of the copper on the backs of their necks and head.
Here is an example.
Do you think he's likely to "copper up" as he gets older? He is by far my biggest and most "mature" looking bird of the group, with the biggest comb and body so I'm surprised he's not showing any copper. And frankly he's the prettiest. He seems to have missed the ugly duckling teenaged goofy awkward stage.
