No, that is too dark, it should be bay. But he looks young and their eye color will change as they mature. If it's still dark when he's 6-8 months old, then worry about it.

Wry tail can indicate pelvic distortions which can lead to hens becoming eggbound or internal layers as I understand it. It's not just to be pretty for shows, most of the faults in the Standard have production origins. We have had wry tails in our egg laying flock. Some were just fine and laid well, others were not as productive.

He is not a layer ( ) so hopefully he will be fine. And I won't use him for breeding. Thank you.

So what is the correct leg type for black copper maran? Feather legged or clean legged? I have heard things on both sides and even 4-H judges dont seem to know which is correct.

Also, is there a Black Maran? My neighbor had a all black rooster that looked just like my black copper but was SOLID Midnight BLACK. No color.

Also, I have seen many hens that people are selling as black copper maran hens that are Solid black, no hackle color and both Clean legged and others (same all black) that are feather legged.

So what is going on here people? Give me the details.

The feathered leg is the APA standard in the USA if you want to show or raise Marans to the SOP. There are black Marans, but I'm no expert on them. Hopefully someone that knows more will drop in. I have started into Marans just this year and will tell you that so many people are confused about them that it's hard to find good ones. Have you looked up the Marans Breeders Club? I would start there. Also, this thread is long, but worth reading from the start. Or at least read the first 50 posts and then the last 300. You will have a basic Marans education by then.

Marans, always with an s on the end, come in Black Copper and Black. The underlying genetics for each variety differs.
To meet the APA standard the birds should have feathered shanks and outer toe. Clean legs may be preferred by some and referred to as British standard. But the APA references the French Standard in our American birds. There seems to be a debate still as to referrring to them as French or not...I dont care either way.
True Black Marans are not as "commom" as the Black Copper but are available from some breeders. Again, the genetics are different and the bird does not carry genes.for copper color.
Black Coppers can appear similar to Black Coppers when they are over-melanized or dark with no copper coloring but are still BCM due to the underlying genes that allow for copper color in areas.
Some use these dark BCM with overly colorful BCM to mediate color in off spring but I am not sure how truly successful this is as a whole. Some may sell them as Black Marans but they are not Blacks and will not breed true in the long run due to having the underlying genetics.
And a Marans is still not a Marans if it lays less than a 4 on the Marans egg scale.

Newly hatched BCM to add to my stock for growing out. The eggs were out of Arkansas from Little Peddler. They are cute, healthy but dark. So we'll see how they turn out.

Package arrived damaged. Only 7 developed and then woke up to no electricity on day 21 with 2 chicks hatched and 1 pipping. Had to help #3 but had 2 more hatch out when electricty came back on. Love my new RCOM.

Congrats! I have heard of great hatch rates for eggs shipped from Little Peddler! Please keep us updated with pictures as they mature. I am very interested in this new line.

I think we may have bred ourselves into a corner with the old lines. I am so looking forward to seeing what the LP's do to further the breed!!! Just my observation and opinion, and I mean no disrespect.

hi sorry to interrupt but i have a question can a pure black copper marans lay light brown eggs ?
(the egg is not very light but it is light for a BCM)
the hen looks like the high quality marans hens i see on the web but the eggs arent as dark as they should be

and the breeder that sold her to me said it is a purebred BCM
i paid alot for that hen i was really disappointed when she started laying
what do you think ?
