Black Copper Marans discussion thread

hi sorry to interrupt but i have a question can a pure black copper marans lay light brown eggs ?
(the egg is not very light but it is light for a BCM)
the hen looks like the high quality marans hens i see on the web but the eggs arent as dark as they should be

and the breeder that sold her to me said it is a purebred BCM
i paid alot for that hen i was really disappointed when she started laying
what do you think ?

Same thing happened to me in the past except I didn't pay a lot for her but she was just a straight run chick from some guy. On the Marans egg color chart, a Marans must lay darker than 4 I believe to be considered a Marans. It's heartbreaking when you have high hopes and end up with a light colored egg :(

First when someone sells a full grown Marans hen we must be aware that something is off center. For as hard as it is to breed a good Marans female no one is going to sell them for any price. Don

Newly hatched BCM to add to my stock for growing out. The eggs were out of Arkansas from Little Peddler. They are cute, healthy but dark. So we'll see how they turn out.

Package arrived damaged. Only 7 developed and then woke up to no electricity on day 21 with 2 chicks hatched and 1 pipping. Had to help #3 but had 2 more hatch out when electricty came back on. Love my new RCOM.
It has always been my mind set that these Black chicks will have a lot of Mossiness going on. I like them to have the Penguin look as chicks. Don

Really? I would have thought just the opposite. I just hatched my first batch, and most of them are pretty dark. White butts and bellies, but almost totally black everywhere else. Figures...

Yes, except then she is no longer technically a Marans.

Did you hold up the eggs that you are getting to the color chart? Even if it just the color chart on the computer, at least you will get an idea of where she is at.

I do agree though, is she is a quality Marans female it would be impressively difficult to find a breeder willing to sell her.

Except for straight run chicks, I only sell culls (but I make it clear why she is a cull when I sell).
