Black Copper Marans discussion thread

A genetics question! Just starting out and at this time have limited choices. I'm getting some hens, half do not have the copper on the neck. I have one 5 month old roo that has black eyes and at this age not much copper but legs/feet are well feathered. With the hens are 2 Roos but they both have the white feather happening. If I were to breed any of theses what are my best chances? I will also have some day olds coming this week from a different breeder, haven't seen the parent stock of these though so not sure what I'm getting yet. Will ask for a pick. Main thing is, if I hatch eggs Fromm the either white feather roo or black eye roo. The pullets from them are the main keepers, will they be viable?

The 5 month old male could still get the correct color eyes. If you breed the white feather Marans you will always have the problem in the future. I would not breed anything with white feathers.

Thanks Snowbird. Yes it's been a week and I took a closer look at the 5 month roo. I didn't have very good lighting before and it seems his eyes aren't completely black. He's getting introduced to flock tonite(only got him 1.5 weeks ago and had to cull the non maran Roos that were with the barnyard mix with Amer. I'm sure in proper daylight they'll look better

There is a local auction for these eggs from this flock. The rooster is from bev Davis and the girls are from a good local breeder.
How do they look to you?

I'm a complete Newbie at all this but correct me if I am wrong please. Rooster in the back is way too black most of the hens look like they have little to no copper

X2. Rear rooster is pretty dark, and front rooster has a wheaten halo at the bottom of his cape. The eggs look nice, but if they are from those birds, I'd give it a pass.

They don't look bad to me. One hen has too much copper on her breast. Otherwise they look good. The Front Rooster looks blue to me.... But that could be alright. Blue and Black will get you mostly black. I got rid of my Blues but they are nice.... To my eye... the eggs look good. And for a starting point you could do alot worse. You will have to do the breeding from what you hatch. But it looks like you would have a good start if those birds are representative. Too many people pay too much money when all the fun is in doing it yourself anyway.... You are just getting the eggs yes? If you win the auction, and you can... make sure the eggs you get are the darkest. The "flock" could be throwing an assortment. Good luck.
