Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Thank you for your response. I have a few marans from another hatch a couple look pretty good so far but they are still young.

So here is a top shot of my Roo.

If that is a white feather I see at the base of the tail I would not use this cock bird for breeding. I think most breeders would say it's a cull with any white feathers at that age.

There is a local auction for these eggs from this flock. The rooster is from bev Davis and the girls are from a good local breeder.
How do they look to you?

+1 on the cock bird advice. I would not judge a picture of Marans eggs without a card next to them. Sometimes a #5 can look amazing without a card next to it.

Are the color of these hens worth working with? I picked them up to work some color into my golden cuckoo marans eggs. The one in the center is probably 16 months. The two at the waterer are just now starting to lay. They seem more yellow on the hackles than brown to me.

Actually 1 is at the waterer. The other is my blue laced barnevelder

I am really hoping for some Marans. Are there any quality breeders in Georgia or surrounding states? If not, can you give me suggestions for breeders that ship? I would love some this year, if not I would like to get on a waiting list for spring.

I can tell you which breeder in GA to stay away from

Sidewing just got some nice chicks from a breeder in FL, and she ships live chicks. If you are looking for good birds, take my advice and spend the money for quality stock up front. I'm a year behind because I got excited and bought the first chicks I founf before really doing my research

If anyone has any "too blue" or too this or too that PULLETS and are willing to ship, let me know how much you want each. Km not looking for breeding birds and honestly wouldn't mind some with too much blue or too much color, since im in it for pretty eggs, so if they are cheap and close to laying or laying.... Let me know, ill give a good home to your "junk" pullets lol

If you can wait until about December I will have 4 hens that started laying this spring that I will sell for general pullet prices

I have 3 BBS Copper Marans cockerels. Only one is black- the other two are very Blue. The black one still has some yellow on his beak. Is that A disqualification? My kids are joining 4H and I'm wondering if I should try to keep this one to see if he's showable in the summer next year.
