Black Copper Marans discussion thread

My cockerel hatched out of the darkest egg! Dark brown with red tint . Will he most likely pass the gene to my hens? I have a few blue and green layers. I was wondering if I should breed him with th. or breed him with my Austrlorp ? I was thinking I would get a good dark egg from them two combined.
Note: these are just my pets I'm not looking for 100% pure just good personalities and eggs. I have to say hands down out of the 5 Roos I have had. Not one co pairs personality wise. Oliver has absolutely the sweetest loving personality. Oliver is absolutely the sweetest loving cockerel ever! He follows me everywhere !!!! He will come when I call his name. I'm in love!! If I had a bit more land I would build a coop just for his breed and another for my BR.

if you breed him with blue/green layers you will get olive eggers.

I wonder if all marans roos are sweet. my mario is sweet too. when I open the door (house) he starts running even without seeing me yet. btw I have 2 roos and 5 cockerels, 2 were surprises. I had to build 2 new coops and now planning to get EEs and OEs out of them. to make my life easier I will put mario with 1 marans pullet and 1 araucana. that way it will be easy to know which one is pure marans and which one OE.

They are definitely NOT all sweet . The last 2 that I had were nasty and the one before was very aloof. BUT, the one I have now is a big sweet heart that comes when called and keeps trying to follow us in the house lol

I hatched some maran chicks that are almost 6 weeks old. They still have a long white wing feather(s) and a few still have the white "speckled" chest. If I didn't know any better, I'd say they have a flare of cuckoo.

I just hatched my bcm, Com pletely purebred from my hen and roo on site. Bcm have white feathers on their wings and chest until they get their adolescent feathers.

400

Bcm chick, purebred 1 week old. Relax your chicks are normal.

the white wing feathers and a cuckoo like chest are impurity in the black coppers strain all around a world .they go a way when they grow, but there s a pure clean black coppers strain no white feathers what ever. .
in my experience from last year we hatched 500 black coppers chicks from all the lines ( strain ) in the country we got 40 chicks pure black ER/ER not one white feather on them.We kept them all and selected from them.this year we are in the second generation F2. from this F2 only 30% of they chicks have a white feathers the other 70% are pure Black, the way they should be.
even in France I have seen a lot lines with a white feathers when young .
we need to breed and select very carefully one generation at the time. I found the black chicks are better than a penguin type ones.
Next year 2016 we are going to start ours lines.2 pullets lines and 5 cockerels lines .

Here are the the black chicks ER/ER.the one i select from.

Post a photo if you can.
Is this what you are seeing on wings?

and this on the chest?

The white wing feathers can show onto white juvenile, or teenage feathers for months... you just don't want white feathers in their adult plumage. Normal for youngsters.

The bottom photo of the white lacing on the chest happens occasionally on some birds. It is not certain what it means. I have heard different theories on what it means. In this case, both birds colored out normally and nicely as adults, there were no adult white feathers or light fluff expressing on either.
