Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Don is very short with his answers, and brutally honest. What he is asking is am I getting purely black copper marans, or are they black coppers from a black/blue breeding pen. That throws a wrinkle into breeding pure blacks

So does that meen they don't breed true? So you can't mix them?

Oh, don't take that the wrong way. I meant the exact same thing. I'm learning, too. Don will be able to give an educated answer. I know what he is implying, but I don't know how to explain it

I didn't take it wrong!

The reason I am asking was I was thinking of a mixed pen! I may need a new pen! lol

SC, Are the chicks you are getting from pure Black Copper or are they from a pen with Blue Copper and Black copper in the same pen ?Some of the chick and egg sellers breed them all in one pen.

That is one of those questions that I wish I knew to ask, but I did research the breeder before I chose to go with her. As soon as you posted this, I emailed and asked her for clarification. Black copper only orders are filled from an all black pen

We have been going over this exact same question over on the Marans Fanciers forum on FB.

So, does that mean blacks from a BBS pen will carry a dilution gene? With my limited knowledge, all I can compare it to is my BBS AMs. I know black by black will only produce black chicks, so does that make them different than a pure black? I know you are a man of few words, but I also know you will give more information if the mood strikes you. Can you give us your opinion on this matter?

SC, Will post what I believe to be fact on the Blue copper and Black Copper. Now you can breed these together but do not use any of the off spring that turn out to be Black Copper back into your pure Black copper. This is where the Black Copper with the Brown lower body feathers come into play. The chick and egg peddlers will say the they are Sun bleached, but is not so. The Black Copper crossed with the Wheaten will also give you the brown lower body feathering.

The Black Copper and Blue Copper cross will also give you more white feathers as the Blue Coppers will have some white feathers as they are not as close to the SOP.

If I were setting up a Blue Copper breeding program. I would use a Blue Copper Splash male over either the Black Copper or Blue Copper females. If your Blue Copper females are on the dark side the splash will lighten them up. I believe the medium Blue color will be what is in the final SOP down the road. You can use a Blue Copper male over the Splash and also the Blue Copper.
