Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Just moved the 4 week olds to the grow out pen. Definitely 2 boys and 11 girls. The one I suspect is blue has sprouted a couple of copper feathers, so if she is blue, she's blue copper

If she is, I will make a trio with her and one rooster, then have the rest in a BCM pen

I climbed into the brooder this morning and grabbed a few pictures of my BCM babies. They range in age from 4-8 weeks old. Any green banded males will not be staying. Their mother does not lay a dark egg so I can't trust the egg gene that they carry though she hatched out of a very dark egg herself. Her daughters will get the chance to prove themselves though. I have babies from one other hen and a couple of chicks from shipped eggs. Hopefully, out of the 20 I have here, I get at least a decent quad out of them. More would be nicer though of course





So far, I'm really liking this pullet. She is green banded so hopefully she carries the dark egg gene.











This boy will not be staying to begin with since he's green banded but he already looks like he'll have too much copper.

Looks blue to me. I can see why she got confused when it was a chick though.

I will try to get an updated pic of my rooster. He is really filling out now and his color looks amazing to me.

As a day old, she was just a touch lighter than the others. After a few days I started to suspect she was blue. I'm pretty sure now, and am glad that if she is blue she's a very dark blue. That's what I'm shooting for with my AMs.
I'd love to see more pictures of your rooster. I only have 2 to choose from, and I'm afraid one is starting to show a little color too early. I'm not going through another whole flock again, though. At least I have a bunch of pullets, and I will try and learn to breed up from there

I am doing a similar cross with my brown-red and splash modern game birds, all offspring should be blue.
