Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Please refresh my memory on how you're deciding these chicks are boys/girls? I just hatched one out yesterday, and wonder what to look for?

Also, I have to admit, the multiple color bands make me think of the plastic bangle bracelets that belonged to my Mom that I used to love to play with wayyyy back when I was a little girl.

The little zip ties work great!

I use
pink for girls
green for EE or OE

IF I have eggs from two different lines or using two different rooster, I tag them differently as they come out of the incubator. . .

They get checked every week for the first month, then every couple weeks after that. We replace them as the leg grows.​

I must have missed to posts where this was discussed... too funny, because I took a photo of the wing last night. I'll have to check it out! I use colored zip ties, too, but never considered using more than one color... duh.

Thanks for the link... I'll post the pic here in a bit with my "prediction" and see if I'm right.

I'm just curious... everything I've read about feather sexing indicates that it's a sexlinked thing... not all breeds, or even birds within a breed are sexable that way... is this something we're testing?

Welll..Im following that chart and it seems I have 4 girls and a boy. But from the looks and size of their combs I thought and think I have 4 boye and 1 girl??

More dark eggs...I wonder how long this will last?

I hadn't thought about feather sexing the chicks hatched last weekend out of eggs almost this dark...think I'll go & take a look now. I really want a couple of boys.

Ok, a question here. I've now seen at least 3 different egg color charts. Some have 1-9, some 4-9 (which makes more sense for Marans). Whose chart is the closest to actual egg color requirements? Of the 3, I've seen a real varience in colors. Anyone know?? Can I assume the parent club that is going for APA approval will have the final say in egg color charts?
