Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I don't have pics of the one with the too feathered shanks. I was hoping it was a girl because Sherman is lacking, but it's comb is getting kinda red! And kinda big!

I haven't heard back from the breeder yet.
#1, the little blue girl is doing a bit better this morning. We were worried about her last night as she wasn't doing too hot but this morning she has both eyes open and ate breakfast with gusto.

I will never be able to Thank You enough for taking the time to put your thoughts to words for all of us! You you totally ROCK!

Do you think that the "brown" colored chicks resemble a chick that is eb or possibly ebc (Borrowed from our favorite site...www.edelras.nl/chickengenetics/mutations1.html) (Brown)- brownish day old chicks, adult male Black Breasted Red, adult hens brown breasted-stippling)? This is what they resemble to me. It will for sure be very interesting to watch these chicks grow and mature. We learn so much from these chicks that come out different than we expect.

Thank you Torghn for sharing them with us, I for one am very appreciative.

I am always working on tagging my birds in a permanent way. Here is what I have found. Wing bands are the best by far and very very easy. They are forever. Next I like the metal leg bands, even if they cost more, they also seem to last. Next best is the plastic rings, but you only can use colors and then I have used the plastic bands with numbers called bandettes, and they often break in my area from cold I suppose, but I find them broken all the time. My favorite bands are from the MOAC web site, if you are a member of their club, you can order special leg bands for cocks and hens, with numbers and year hatched on them. They are also color coded, different color each year. SO, I am doing this. Wing bands, certain colors for certain lines and years, then a detailed description in my log, then I am placing a colored ring for year born, AND with age I am placing the metal bands from MOAC. (Marans of America Club). That has worked best for me. The rings are just in case a band falls of, and not really necessary. I also add occas bands to mean various things, such as who grew faster, who I like best at the time, who I plan to cull, etc. I don't like those little rubber bands after chicks get a few weeks old, as I tend to forget them, but at hatch they are helpful somewhat. Great place to get those little colored bands, Wal-mart in the hair section. Mine came in a container of about 6 colors. If you need the website for bands, PM me, but I buy mine local when I can.

BTW WELCOME!!!

In some it can take several weeks or even a couple to few months to show. Each birds is different and each line of birds is different and mature and color at different rates. That said I have seen copper start to come in as early as 2-3 weeks to 4 mos. of age, and I have seen copper continue to come in on a bird to 1.5 years of age.

Thanks Pink, I enjoy your posts too!
When they originally posted the chick pics a few weeks ago, I immediately thought eb too. I have some chicks with Db that look like that too, but Db is only present in blacktail buffs in Marans and is a Columbian type restrictor. I doubt any blacktail buff genes would pop up in BCM stock without first producing some yellowdowned wheaten chicks too.

I think eb would be a weird thing to pop up in Marans. I know wyandottes and brahmas are on eb, the patterned ones anyway. How that would come into a pure Marans line is not clear unless they were breeding for some new Marans color and crossing in another variety of chicken. But they said they should have been black copper so I doubt that option either. For ER to mutate to eb would seem less likely too... I think e+ to eb would be much more likely.

We won't know til they feather out more I think. This stuff is so fun to watch!

Hello to all! I am new to the BCM family and have been thinking on these for over a year.

PICTURES PICTURES PICTURES - - - You only have 1 post so far so you might have to wait a little bit before BYC lets you post. . . .
They were putting a wait on new comers for a while so that SPAMMERS didn't post nasty things . . ..
