Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Put them on a perch. They will take a few minutes to figure out if they can jump down or not, thats when you get a good shot. Good luck with the photo shoot!

Yes they do. I believe we are looking at wanting a rooster to have 10% copper on the chest. Wait for them to go through a molt before you can tell how much copper will stay.

and as Math would say..... Let's see a picture!

Hi all,
I just hatched last month some new BCMs to integrate new blood into my small flock...
the eggs were very pretty and dark, and for shipped eggs I had a pretty good hatch... almost half...
and good news is that I think I have two hens, and two roos...
my current roo has red on his breast, and also has a bum foot... not sure what is up with that, but he limps...
hu.gif

so, he will retire and one of these will take his place as lead roo...

Just wanted to show pics... and see if you agree two roos, two pullets...

here are the eggs...

oh geeze... edited to add, this isn't one of them!! I think this is one of the mixed chicks.. they have BCM in the mix and one looks ALMOST like the full breds, but no feathers on his legs... hmmm... and came from a pink egg! so, sorry, I think this is Cookies and Cream... ack...

22466_100_0252.jpg

and I 'think' this is the first one again... hmmm... got mixed all up!!!

any guesses on sex?
and thoughts on how 'good' they look?
I do have to say, they are sweet, cute, but so darn ugly at this gawky stage, fluff coming out all over... total bad hair day!!!
that last one has a feather growing upside down on that right wing! LOL!!! poor fella... it'll get better... then how purty they will be!
thanks!

one last question... my hen who is a year old has no copper, just the blue/green sheen... is that 'bad'... ?

It works best for me if I have a second set of hands. . . . someone else to help.

I set up the area I want to photograph them in and then get the camera ready. Dh grabs the chick and positions it. Steps back and I snap the picture. . . .

The alternative is to take a big mixed drink and a lawn chair out to the coop / brooder area. . . Set back, sip your drink and RELAX. Take shots el natural as they occur. This approach takes longer, but does get some good shots.

You want a picture showing chest and head. Also, you want a picture showing side and normal posture ( if possible).

GOOD LUCK!

Ok So here we go. I bought these 2 at a local auction. Checked to see if the buyer had said what they were.
They put down hens. I had my suspicions that they were Black Copper Marans.

I started learning about this breed from pinkchick last spring. I have blue and splash CM roosters and pullets.
so I have been on the lookout for blacks.

So they have been in a quarantine cage for over 2 weeks now. Both have light feathering on their legs. Similar to Ruths hens on page 51 of this thread.

I have gotten 2 eggs so far, the first one the size of a golf ball and the second a bit larger. When I found the first one I did a little dance,

because it was the color of my other BCM's. At least a 5 in color.

So my question to all of you that know about this breed is what do you think? Black Copper Marans, or at least they lay a nice dark egg and stick the two of them in the eating /selling egg pen? It is almost time for them to go somewhere as quarantine is almost over.

I would love a couple of these lovelies (hens preferably) for the dark brown eggs and gorgeous feathers. Any idea where I could get so few and get them in Maine? I have an order of day old fuzzy butts coming at the very end of March, so I'd l need to integrate them.

Have you checked the bottom of his foot for bumblefoot?

I have and it looks just fine... he doesn't like me to touch it either, and he's normally a pretty cool roo...
I thought he broke it last fall, jumping out of the coop... but unless it didn't heal...
I dunno

Welcome to all the folks! Welcome neighbor chicknfishn! So you got some black copper girls finally. WOOT! On top of that Ms. chicknfishn.....you tell me you get a pretty splash rooster and he just so happens to be from me somehow and you dont share pictures of him? You must send me all the details in a PM........

Oh, here is my black hen who is supposed to be a BCM hen...
but the pics I see are mostly black hens with some copper hackles...
is she ok to use for breeding???

her story is that I bought Welsummer eggs and had them shipped, and I found this funny thing at hatching day...
22466_100_3342.jpg

22466_100_3344.jpg

the original seller said he only raises two kinds of chickens, Welsummer and BCM... so... guess it was a BCM.
I found the roo as a 'spare' from a local BYCr who hatched but only could use one roo...
