Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Well, the roo in question/being discussed is over a year old now so the lady who bought the eggs from Tom Dean got them probably about 13 months ago. I don't know about Tom Dean other than the good reputation I've heard about. Someone indicated they thought the roo was crossbred so I wanted to find out if he did indeed, crossbreed and for what purpose.

WHITE FEATHERS question. . .

I have been saving any postings that quoted specifications for the proposed standards for BCM.

I went back and looked at them this morning. I do not have anything about those NASTY white feathers.

I know they are a BIG no - no.

Is there a link that says something about them ?

I think the Blues are going to be allowed one white feather but the blacks were allowed none. . ..
On black coppers, Which is it . . . a DQ or a fault ?

Thanks for any help . . .

The Blue Coppers can have no more than 2 white feathers before they are DQ'd.

Will go look for the BCM stuff.

Okay....I thought it was mentioned in the General Standard but it is not even mentioned there unless there is an even more updated version that I don't have.

Funny that it would say something about the white feather on a Blue Copper, but it doesn't mention anything about the BCM.

Anyway....in answer to your question, I thought it was a DQ if a BCM had any white.

(after thought) wonder if it is in the SOP under General Cuts and Defects.......I made the mistake of loaning my tattered SOP book to someone and I haven't gotten it back yet or I would look it up for you. Maybe Don will pop by....I know he knows this stuff right off the top of his head.

The thing with side sprigs is, they can pop up after years of breeding birds without them, so, the person you bought the rooster from, may have no idea of where the side sprigs came from.
They have side sprigs in France too, not just here, its something that probably will never go away completely, but as Don said, don't breed him you will be passing it on.

On the BC a solid white wing or tail feather is a DQ. the white undercolor is a Fault, True this is covered in front part of the SOP.

To get an official answer on this I had ask Walt a while back, he took it to the Committe at Shawnee and came back and said white tail or wing feather is a DQ and undercolor white is a major fault.

A little heads up for the Blue Copper and others in my own opinion they will not be allowed to have the white feathers.

I also asked Walt about if the Club wanted to allow white wing and tail and he said the APA would not allow. Don

Thanks Don!

I've wondered why the proposed standard for the Blue Coppers was the only variety to be allowed 2 white feathers on the bird, do you know why this is? (I know you said that it will probably change but am curious as to why it states it is okay for now in the proposed)

Kim, I for one would like for the MCCUSA to get with the program and update the proposed standards for the other colors that are on the verge of having a qualifying meet come up in the near future. Nothing has been done to any of them except the BC Marans and that wasn't done until just before the meet.

What is going to happen if for say the Blue Copper was allowed to have white in wing and tail and they are back crossed to the BC for color. If you put any of the BC back into your Pure BC you are introducing the white feather back into the pure BC and opening up another can of worms. This is one reason I am against using these BC from the Blue Copper mating back with the pure BC.

The reason for the white feather to be in the Blue Copper proposed standard is because the person that originally drew up the proposed Blue Standard didn't really know what they were doing in my opinion. Don

Most of the time the white on leg feathers is shedded out after the juve molt, after the Juve molt I would have to deal with. The more white you allow to be on the BC the more you will have to deal with later.

One thing right at present that is not helping is that Marans with white wing and tail feathers are being placed first and are not being DQ. I seen pictures of several Marans with white that won at Newnan, When the Judge doesn't even know the Proposed standard it makes it even harder for the exhibitor. Marans at Ohio National were placed first with white. Should never make a difference how many is in a class , if a Marans has a DQ it should be DQ'd Don
