Black Copper Marans discussion thread

He could be standing a little awkwardly - I know they often don't care to have their pics taken!

But, the "u" shape that he appears to have makes him look, to me, to lack substance. I prefer cockerel #1 of the 3, but again, I am no expert. I find cockerel #1's balance to be better overall...but, opinions are what makes the world turn 'round! I'd take cockerel #1 in a heartbeat - I really like him!

Lisa, leg feathering is one of the things I cull for and do not use a clean leg Marans in my breeding pens. Now I realise that most of the male have a lot less leg feathering and try and select males that have the most feathering. Don

So, it looks like we can agree that cockerel #3 may be heading to the soup pot and the other two cockerels show potential and we will look at them again at the 3 month mark! It will be very interesting to see the changes then. cockerel #2 was the biggest at 2 months and cockerel #1 was the smallest by about 1/2 lb.

THANK YOU Wynette and snowbird. .. . I appreciate the feed back very much! I really did not take GREAT pictures this time around, but will take more time with them next time around!

Ok so I ordered a half dozen Splash/Blue Copper Marans from Nadine....hatched 2 BCM and 2 BlCM and this one......Could it be a GCM?? It looks nothing like the others. Here is her link to her GCM's ....I swear it looks just like the chick in the pick. What do you all think? Did I get someone else's order??

Hello again! I've got updated photos of the babies! Please let me know your thoughts on these FBCMs. They are now 11 weeks old.
I've got gender questions (really concerns, b/c I can't keep a roo) about Band#3 and #8 in particular, so if you could take a look and let me know your opinion, I would really appreciate the input! Thanks!

I have no idea who this is, but they're asking themselves the same thing!

Bless your heart for saying that (even if you're wrong).

I really, really really don't want to have to lose any of them to something as silly as a "Y" chromosome but my neighbors don't appreciate roosters in the same way we do!

Oh, and you cant blame it on a Y--the real culprit is the double Z

I hatched out a few like that in my first clutches. I removed the lightest hackled hen from the breeding pen and they stopped showing up. Oh, and one roo that had too much red and black spots on his chest. They seemed to be the culprits in making that exact bad color combo. If you keep a flock "just for eggs" she might do great in there as a layer.
