This batch was born EARLY NOV 2010.

Lisa, I really like the width of his back and length, if he doesn't like the hot Florida weather you could always send him to Michigan for the summer. Don

Wow, he looks very similar to my roo #2, he has more colour though (maybe even lighter in places than my guy) and has feathered legs

Thanks for posting pics of him. This is all so much fun!!! Can't wait to see them in another month............

Thank you Don.

He and the rest of his hatch mates caught a NASTY case of Fowl Pox in January. . .. He was on 3 different oral antibotics for 2 weeks. It was during the Juvie molt period too. So, he has some feather issues that I am waiting to see if the next molt corrects.
He was always slowed down SIZE wise too - - I think - - because of this.

I have noticed him starting to really chunk on some size recently. He is looking like he might get his chunky monkey dad's size with his momma's longer back.

LESSON LEARNED: I do vaccinate for FOWL POX on my property. It is just as routine as treating for worms or lice or mites. . .

Most people only have to deal with the "DRY" pox. We got the "WET" and "DRY" at the same time. This guy was almost $300 in one vet visit. OMG - - - I don't play with Fowl Pox!

I was VERY FORTUNATE that it did not effect the rest of my flock - - - just the November's hatching. . .

Math~ I agree with Don. The second photo....shows what the width of the shoulders of a Marans roosters should look like IMO. This is exactly what I watch for in males. I can also see what looks like the beginnings of that nice well rounded beefy Marans chest starting on him. I agree with you as well about him bulking up even more over the next few months, I think you may well like his size when he reaches maturity. I have a couple of very dark hens that I think would work wonderfully if paired with him.

His chest is HUGE. I told Dh to grab pic of it, but he did not listen! I will post a pic soon of his chest.

Don - - he has white in the hackle base . . .

Do you think if I found a really really really dark female it would help over come the white in the hackles OR do you think there is absolutely no way to do some compensating breeding that could correct it ? ? ?

While we are your the discussion of roos - -- Do any of you folks have an older roo ( 2 plus years old) who is still fertile with a high percentage? There were some commercial studies produced that said by 2 years of age, roos would be shooting 90% blanks. I wondered if this was true in the non-commercial environment.. . ..

I have a 4 yr old EE roo and all the eggs from his pen are at 100% fertility
