I am so stumped on this chick my friend. Normally I would fire off the gender but I just can't with this chick for some reason. By the last photo alone I would be tempted to say cockerel but the other photos leave me wanting to say pullet because by six weeks I would think that the comb would be much bigger like PrincessChickens'.

I know its driiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiving me nuts.. too... its like... errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..LOL/ thanks though so much for trying..

xoxoxo

wannabchick,

For what it's worth, this chick looks almost exactly like one of my first PULLETS! I would've bet the farm that she was a roo, but she now lays a lovely #6 colored and speckled egg! Keep the faith!!

Would you do it yourself, or take it to the salon?

Can you imagine that conversation?

Spa: Hello, Whispering Trees Dayspa

Jennifer: Hi, I was wondering how much you'd charge for toe waxing?

Spa: Oh, that's only $5. Could we interest you in a bikini wax to go with that?

Jennifer: No, that's ok. I don't think the judges really care about feathers on the bikini area. I don't think there's a bikini section in the competition anyway.

Spa: (sounding confused) feathers?! You have feathers in your bikini area?!

Jennifer: Oh, no, the waxing is for the chicken, not me. I don't think she wants a bikini wax, just the toe wax. She has a big competition coming up.

Spa: WHAT?! Really?! You want us to wax a CHICKEN?

Jennifer: Yeah, see, they can't have feathers on their middle toe, so I gotta get rid of that before it starts.

I posted this in the emergencies section but thought I would post here as well in case any of you have experienced this: We culled a 5 1/2 month old BCM roo this evening, he was far from SOP so needed to go. Upon beginning to skin him, found a good, 2" tumor/lump on his breast, did not cut into it, just disposed of the bird. He had been slightly limping for about 2 weeks, upon a thorough going over could find nothing wrong with the leg or foot (I asssumed he got into a spat, he is one of several roos coming of age). Today the limping was much more extreme and the other roosters were picking on him so we decided tonight was the night. He was always a very quiet, gentle roo, often in the coop when the others were free ranging but certainly seemed healthy, active and eating and drinking well. He was roached back and feathers on the middle toe (He was my roo #3 I have posted pics of on this thread that was considered "lacking"). I was quite fond of him due to his gentle nature. 50 other birds in my flock ranging from 3 months to 2 years old, all housed together in a community coop and they have the option to free range all daylight hours. No others limping and all seem happy/healthy. We have butched many birds over the years, dual purpose and meaties, never seen anything like this before. Could this have been Mareks?? Any other ideas??

Yikes! I was thinking Mareks, too. Are any of the other birds showing signs of growths? I would sneak into the coop at night and give them all a good, old fashioned pat down-TSA style

I have NO IDEA, but want to know. Will you share the link (or title) to the other thread so that I can monitor your responses there too.

I will check the others for lumps, but, like I said he was always "different" (I did not think sick!) from the others. His flock mates were 7 other BCM roos, he would sleep/rest during the day kind of burrowing under the hanging feeders in the coop (sometimes another would join him) and I would reach under both his wings and rub him, he started really liking that! At night he would sleep in the pile with the others on the ground until they started to roost which they all did at once.

The other post is in the Emergencies/Diseases/Injuries/Cures section titled RE: BCM tumor on breast, there have been no responses so I just gave it a bump.........
