This guy is 6 weeks old - I know the pics are less than helpful, but is THIS what I'm looking for in width/breadth?
This little guy is, by far, the biggest, widest, heaviest of all the birds his age in my coop.
but....he was less than willing to pose for his photo shoot....

p.s. the white flash on his back is b/c he's loooowwww on the pecking order and gets picked when he's sleeping...
maybe HE needs an apron!

My post got lost along the way too. So here it goes again. Here are my 3 hens and my rooster. I would love some critiques on them. I was wondering about the coloring on the rooster. Does it need to be more coppery colored (is it too orange)?. Please let me know. What would be a good breeding strategy for the next generation?

I have learned one thing . . . . .If I see heavy feathering like this again, I WILL KNOW that it ain't going to get any better!

WOW - - -I just can't believe the amount of leg feathering on this boy. Neither parent has ANYTHING close to this amount of feathering. It is JUST CRAZY to see it!

It is a SHAME because this is the biggest of the three brothers AND has a nice long back. HOWEVER, there is NO WAY I want that leg feathering re-enforced in my future generations!

Lisa, are you saying you do not like this much feathering on the Marans feet. ?

Don beat me to it! Lisa, you can send that boy here if you don't like him! Looks like very desirable amount of shank/toe feathering to me.

Will take on your male. The hackle color to me is fine and is not to light. I would like to see a little more color in the saddle area but no problem. Take a look at the back end of his comb, see how the back of the comb appears to be against the neck, this is not good and should come out away from the neck. The wattle appear to be a little wrinkled also. Could use a little more foot feathering. All that said overall a very nice type and looking male.

You are kidding RIGHT ? ? ? He looks like he could FLY with his feet feathers alone!

The feathers are all fluffy too! They aren't like regular feathers, they are light baby fluff!
I liked what he was showing at 9 weeks - - - BUT now there is even more feathers. . .

I thought the standard called for lightly feathered. . . .
My other two cockerels have what I think of when it comes to being "lightly" feathered.

He shows almost no leg - - - he is feathered and thickly feathered all the way down the leg except at this tiny spot at the knee cap.

Lisa, I think the term, "lightly feathered" is in comparison to shank feathering in others breeds, like say a Cochin or Brahma? They would have heavy feathering, so compared to them, those ARE lightly feathered.

I think his feathers look just right! Plus, see the hen behind him in the first pic? He'll help to correct her lack of feathering in the chicks. JMHO

As long as the feathers are only on the outside of the shank, and only on the outside toes, he is fine.
