Bev, the only thing I could find on the white toe feathering on Black is on the Black Langshan and it say there is to be no deduction for white toe feathering. I ask walt for an interpretation of the SOP and the Standards committee.

Hi bev, Remember back I was a member until 1st. of January. I fail to see anything saying the white in shank and toe feathering is acceptable or not acceptable.

While you are here do you have any idea of what color of undercolor the BC should have. I have found nothing in print. I think it should be a dull black. I culled all the brown undercolor out of my flock last year but will have a lot again from one male that I have used.

Wow I have been reading over 200 pages in the Marans thread and it’s great. Especially when Bev posts, because she is a BCMs legend here in SoCal. I have been breeding for the perfect type for almost two years and wonder has anyone found a way to keep the egg color from fading in the laying cycle. My eggs have gone from 8 to 4 and back to about 6. Does diet effect egg color?

I don't think anything has been linked to keeping the egg color dark; hens are born with a certain amount of "paint" for their eggs, and when it's gone, it's gone. At least that's how it has been explained to me.

Nice birds! I have found that the egg color can change quite a bit in the laying cycle. Weather, stress, feed, rough roo, extra greens, it all affects egg color, as well as the length of time they are into their laying cycle. All my hens vary the amt of color on the egg, some use more on one end instead of the other, some speckle it one day, smooth the next.

So this is a good hatch in your mind??? The good color you are going for??? I am just trying to keep up to speed. I see a lot of orange heads... This is male AND female???? It sure looks different from your last hatch...

What a different chick profile...

Just a recap... THese are likely a cull pile??? I am sorry I am not sure I am understanding correctly.. You have others that make the grade and these ones do NOT????
