Don't feel silly. He looks like he's part BCM. His leg feathering is really heavy, he's WAY too orange/coppery and the yellow feet definitely suggest a cross. That's why BYC is here though. So that you can network and learn. I know I learn TONS everyday. I'm a total novice. You'll get the hang of it and eventually if you're up to it, buy some BCM eggs from someone on here that's reputable and hatch them. Or not it's totally up to you. But we're not here to judge so much as help each other. Oh and

I respectfully disagree; I currently have two purebred Marans from a known, reputable breeder that have yellow feet. They make lovely eating eggs! There's a ton we all need to work on with this breed. Foghorn could very likely be a purebred Marans, just a very poor quality one. Many folks are breeding simply for egg color...nothing wrong with that, but this guy shoudl definitely not be used for breeding. I have to say, though - I love his feathered shanks!

aaaah...I feel liberated - I just got out of the BCM game and sold mine. They're too fat, stupid, loud and just a useless drag to own. I did keep one, just in case.

I disagree with Wynette. Sure, he is a very handsome bird, no denying that. He maybe carries good dark egg genes, (not likely since I have silkies that lay darker than the hen he came with).

According to the proposed standard of the MCCUSA (Marans Chicken Club of the United States of America) yellow legs is a DQ (disqualification) which makes it NOT a marans. If we are going to help newbies, we could at least help them by telling them the truth about birds they were sold. Telling her her rooster is a very nice bird and a good prospect for breeding for dark colored eggs is doing her a disservice, as well as to any other person who would read your post.

Just because a bird has a disqualification does not mean they are not a purebred bird.
