Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Cute!!!

And yes the bird in the first photo is a pullet.

math ace - I was just joking about the "loud, stupid, lazy" thing. The truth is, I have too many chickens crammed into a residential backyard because I'm between farms, the new place is a veritable wildlife park, crawling with every predator imaginable so I'm not moving a single chicken there until security is tighter than GITMO. I'm down to my 9 absolute most valuable players now, with one rooster a hundred miles away.

With regard to the Olive Eggers being mistaken for Marans, this is something that's very prone to happening particularly with the first/second backcrossings (back to Marans)...they're likely to lose the winterized face and look more like Marans at that point. This is why I'm selecting for a junglefowl-like build in my OEs. It's potentially a huge issue from a breed preservation standpoint, and Res tried to warn everybody in the OE thread, but nobody wanted to take him seriously.

yep... Resolution with the feed solution..... Gosh I love his threads.... NIce to see you MM... Move the GLW's first... ha ha....

Here they are, the two Cuckoos and one remaining Black Copper. She's short in the back, but one of the four darkest layers I had kept after selling off the rest and her broodiness is what kept her here.

AWE.... so cute!!! You can bring the BC darkie layer to me mm.... (she is welcome at my hut anytime)

I was going to post this in the incubating and hatching section, but my question is specific to Marans, so here it is. If it is not in the right place, feel free to relocate it!

I have PM'd a couple of you Marans experts and gotten some great advice about the specifics of hatching these birds but I wanted to also open it up to anyone who has something that worked for them and tips for how I can maximize a Marans hatch with a dozen+ carefully packaged and shipped eggs (through the PO though) and incubated in a styrofoam bator. Does anyone have any nuggets of wisdom?? I would really appreciate it!

My bad! I have an awful time with AUTHOR'S tone...... I can read faces very accurately, but the written word is a little harder for me to catch the implied humor. Must be that analytical mind of mine
