Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Updating pics again on my FBCM. S/he is about 4-5 weeks...I think????? The comb is bigger than many that I see on here but I swapped pics with another woman who purchased some from the same breeder and the females do have somewhat large combs for girls at this age....so that made me feel more hope :) In fact, her boys had much pinker/redder and rounded combs. His/her comb kind of "lays down" to the right..so it is bigger than it looks, but still very white/yellow.... Just wondering what the concensus is from everyone at this point as far as boy/girl. Either way, I love this baby. Very shy, nervous, but a love. Thanks for looking!

See? Comb looks bigger from this side....

Editing to add that s/he is more like 6 weeks old. Been hard to figure the exact age because it was not specific when I got her (Im just going to keep calling it a her and hope she turns into one :)

Please do not be sorry for asking this question.....lots of folks would not ask.
If I have the need to cull a day old or very young chick I use the baking soda and vinegar method. No mess to clean up. I also burn the bodies to dispose of them.
Thanks for this. Cannot believe I did not think of it. I tried burying them but since we put our cattle dog of 14 years down our resident fox has boldly been digging them up. My husband sometimes takes what the hawk doesn't finish into the woods out back.

I'm gonna hold on to my feathered middle toe chicks but what about that outside toe being really short. I hatched 2 that have toes so short they look like they are almost missing, especially on one and they are super dark all over. Feet, beaks, everything.

Think I'll try a volano with my 3 year old this summer...haven't done that since my other boys were little.

Hopefully someone more experienced will chime in on this--I have only read the posts discussing that outside toe length. Apparently it goes with leg feathering, so it is ok.

I have middle toe feathering too. Other things to focus on first for me.

Please help me sex these 6 week olds!

Group shot: I think Hen, Roo, Roo. The 2nd one doesn't have a tail yet and is much smaller than the others, not sure if he is actually the same age.

#1 Hen?

#2 Roo?

#3 Roo?

Looks like 2 roos to me. If you cant tell by the comb. look at the wattles. Males wattles form before the females and are pinker.

On another note, has anyone else hatched out a "lot" more males than females? I'm drownning in boys and from what I hear, people that have chicks from me also have way more males....

Sue, my lone pullet from you that I have from last year is producing mostly girls, out of about 40 chicks (several different hatches) she has given me about 30 girlies.......... Her boyfriend was a Craigslist special, supposedly Davis line. Here she is, my little butterball with her mate and one of their little girls:

Sue I wanted boys and it seems I just have 4 the rest are pullets. I seem to get more girls than boys in my hatches. I've read that using an older male with pullets will hatch more girls and same with older hens and a young guy...but I've been hatching lots of pullets from my sibling crosses and that should be mostly males so I don't know maybe it's the water. Kinda like crowing very seldom do I have anybody crow until they are 4 months old or better or maybe I can't hear them over the older guys....

We sent a few of our extra roos to camp this week. We were impressed with how heavy/big they were! We get way more roos than hens hatch.
