Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I hate computers! I posted this last night and nothing this morning. So, I'm re posting. Anyway, I bought 5 eggs off ebay in April and it turned out that they were only 30 miles away. 4 out of 5 hatched, the 5th wasn't fertile. I received my first egg yesterday. I haven't been able to tell if any are roosters. The woman I bought them from shows them successfully. They are from the Wade/Davis line. They are truly beautiful but I don't think they follow "the perfect" guideline. I started reading this thread, it's so full of information. Thanks. I just love my "girls" (maybe boy) No crowing.

I am by no means and expert.... but they look pretty good to me...except the one in the last picture. The egg looks on the light side but if it is a pullet egg, it may get darker. I don't see a roo in these pictures.

I have been watching these 4 ever since they hatched. The eggs they hatched from were very dark. Didn't know anything about the color chart when I started. What are the odds to end up with 4 hens? I need to start looking for a roo. I really like hatching eggs but I'm not sure if I'll ever get rid of the chicken dust in the bathroom! The egg is the very first and it's a little darker than it looks in the picture but not nearly as dark as I hope it to be.

It happens, I had a hatch of 7 roos and 1 pullet and the very next hatch of the same breed 5 pullets and 1 roo. One of my batches of Marans I only got 1 pullet, maybe 5 roos or more.

One of my hatches the first of the year, 18 chicks, and only 3-4 roos..... just the law of averages.....

Make sure you get the BEST roo you can, they give their genes to 100% of the chicks....

There is something about the computer yesterday and today... major issues here too.

I lost my cockerel Polish over night so that plan is dead as well. Hopefully a Maran cockerel who isn't too bad will come my way. Still crossing my fingers. I don't mind breeding up but not from Appalacia you know??

Brought home a pair of Black Copper Maran chicks on Saturday! So excited, had to search long and hard for them
Love their fluffy feet and hoping hoping both are hens!

I'm so happy you found them. It appears that I now need a BCM rooster. You know where will prob have to freeze before I find one near my own's ages. But........I did get a 2nd pullet egg today. Considerable larger and considerably darker. Yahoo!
My camera does not do justice to the colors. The larger egg is quite dark but I'm hoping for much darker.

Try putting something white in the photo to balance the color. I know with my blue Ameraucana eggs I will put something white and something red (like a Red Delicious apple) to balance the color and show a truer blue, really makes those gorgeous eggs pop out!

OOlala loving all these pictures!!!

Having very dark eggs takes a long time, selective breeding year after year. I do find my girls become more consistant in their size and color the longer they are laying. ANd I find pictures do not do them justice colorwise. Just too hard to capture the correct color for our viewing pleasure.

Out of 4 self hatched BCM I have gotten 3 eggs in 4 days. Each egg is darker than the one before it. I don't think they are from just one hen, but I'm lovin' it! Rinda, I followed your advice and used some of my granddaughters play food containers and it certainly made a difference.
