Black Copper Marans discussion thread

For 6 months, he's MIGHTY impressive. (His tail concerns me a little .... ) But I certainly wouldn't be eating him anytime soon.

I really do appreciate the help assessing him, I will be sure to keep him out of the pot and see what I get for chicks in the spring.

FYI I do have a few yellow footed hens to test mate him against and will do that when the dog is no longer using the kennel!

thanks all!

Thanks all, for getting back to me on my male.

maryhysong..... good luck with your hatch. and unless you have an obvious defect like fused toes or obvious color issue like yellow feet or mossyness, always wait to cull. I almost ate this boy as he was slow to mature and took forever to grow tail feathers!
thank you. anxiously awaiting the hatch (Nov 15) I think I've seen several posts on here about how the slower feathering roos turned out to be the best ones. This does seem counterintuitive to me tho because especially with a free range flock it seems you would want chicks that feather in as fast as possible to protect from the weather. Tho I suppose once you have a handle on the type and color you could start to concentrate on things like faster feathering.

Question on white feathers in tail and longer feathers in tail. How detrimental is it? I cannot find anything in the Marans standard that talks about those long arching tail feathers nor having a white feather or two in them. Also, if a young cockerel (7 months) has the white tail feathers, will they remain after first moult? Thanks.

DQ's for other parts of the body . . .

Roach back

Twisted Wing Feather

Brown wing bay on BC male

White wing OR tail feather

Split wing

Slipped wing

Squirrel tail

Wry tail

Split tail

Most of the DQ's listed on this thread will not be found in the Marans standard section of the SOP. Instead, the DQ's are found in the first 40 pages of the SOP. They are considered "General Faults / DQ's" and applicable to all breeds.

I have a quetion about the white feathers--while it is a DQ in a specific bird, how many of the offspring will show this trait? 50%, 100%? THe reason I'm asking is that I have a male that is one of my nicer boys otherwise. OR is it better to just use another boy without the white but with other issues?

mine did even after year old molt

OK, thanks for that info. I will watch. These two 7 month olds I acquired have some spectacular features about them but one has white tail feathers that is a bit squirrel tailed so I know that's two strikes against him. I will see what he and brother produce and cull from there. I haven't had much luck with roosters and my Marans so maybe this will give me a bit of a start and then I can go from there.

I posted a pic of a 4 month old roo above, anyone want to give me input on that? Thanks.
