Does anyone know about black copper marans, 13 hatched look like penguin and one all yellow with a little copper coloring on back?? I talked to gentleman and he thought line must have Wheaton somewhere and suggested I check here. Said he hasn't had one yet but would like to.
Thanks for any info.

Can you post a pic of it?

I do know wheaton is the bane of good black copper breeders--it pops up spontaneously like this from time to time.

I just hatched 3 BCM's out of 6 eggs...3 did not make it, but they had fully formed chicks.

I got 3 Black Coppers, 2 Splash (yellow with smudgy coloring) and 1 Blue (lighter blue/grey than the black).

Depending upon what the Marans were in the Black Copper line, the breeder repeatedly warned me you can get any of those colors plus a throw back to Wheaten. It is all the toss of the genes.

You might even have a Blue Copper, again depending upon what was in the line.

Good news is, they all lay darker eggs...the Black Coppers often the most dark, but the others lay dark eggs too.

I still can't get pics up not sure why but I will keep trying. It looks like I have a wheaten and a blue copper as well as a bunch of little penguins. Pretty cool that is just an added bonus. Thanks

If that yellow chick came from his line of BCM (and he's POSITIVE no other mystery roo came for a visit to the breeding area) with his BCM hens, then a yellow chick is a sign of recessive Wheaten mixed into his BCM... At the least, the mixed genes come from one of his hens, AND his roo covering that hen.

Wheaten is not desired in BCM if you are planning to eventually breed them. If these chickies will be just a lovely backyard flock who will give pretty eggs, then it doesn't matter. To breeders, Wheaten pops up different issues that are not acceptable for showing and breeding. If you decide to sell these chickens, you should make sure to inform new owners that they have shown positive Wheaten in their lineage. However, your birds can be tested so you know for sure when they get older-if you care about that.

In this thread, I explain how the Wheaten genes come into play and how it was explained to me how to test them. I will be soon testing both of my BCM before breeding to see if either of them test positive for Wheaten. If either of them test positive we won't breed them.

If nothing else, the BCM thread is a great learning tool for anyone really wanting to know about them. This is a wonderful breed IMO. The roos are so good to the hens, and they are mellow sweethearts. Hope you enjoy your little ones!
