I bought this rooster earlier today. Hes 4 months old. He's Wade Jeane line. Does he look pretty good? I dont plan on showing him or anything. But I would like to breed him for a few chicks so I can have BCM hens.

You might want to check out the French standard for Black Copper Marans to see what one is supposed to look like. Your rooster may have some Marans in him but he's definitely not pure. I've never seen a Wade Jeane line bird with legs that pale or without leg feathering. Also, he's almost as red as a Rhode Island Red and has barred feathers in his wing primaries. Sorry to break the news to you but I would definitely not breed him and would find another Rooster if you want to breed BC Marans. There are plenty of breeders that have good quality BC Marans roosters for sale. Good luck.

Well thats what I get for not doing my research 100%.

I emailed the lady and was asking all kinds of questions about him before hand too. She assured me that they were bought from a breeder that had WJ lines. Not just some eggs that were from ebay or a hatchery. Grr! I thought the barring was a little odd. I had never seen them in a BCM before, but of course my mind went caplooy when I was talking with her. I kept telling myself that it was something that I overlooked online and that maybe some of them do have them.

Well rats! Now what am I gonna do with him? I dont need another rooster unless hes going to be somewhat breeder stock.

ETA: Thanks guys. I apprecaite the hepl.

Here's a picture of a typical Black Copper Maran rooster for comparison. He has a little too much yellow in his neck hackle but otherwise he is to standard. Hope this helps.

wow im sorry you got scammed so badly

As my marans partner tells me "breeders breeding for eye candy" meaning those breeding for $ instead of for the breed itself. Its a shame.

I wouldnt have even thought he was a marans if you hadn't had mentioned it, his tail is carrying wrong it looks, and too high IMO, leg color should be pink or grey, eye color should be that firey red color and your birdies are yellow even his comb looks oddly shaped...and yes the barring. Now, the over-coppering i've sene before in purebred marans esp in the WJ lines this can be improoved but ina bird like this that doesnt look much like a marans its best to look else where

Well I guess I got caught up in the moment too. I have so much going on around here and then when I found this person who had a BCMs that was 'supposedly' from brreder stock.

I guess that I let it get the better of me and not check into it fully. Although the picture that she did send me doesnt look too much like the one I got now that I think about it. I guess Im out that money that I paid for him, it wasnt much ($10) but still.. To think that Im basically going to have to give him for away for free now.

I guess this is my 10 dollar mistake huh. Live and learn..

I think we all make mistakes, this year is my year for multiple silly, mistakes. Don't feel too bad, he is still a pretty Roo. Keep a list of breeders and make a big black X by her name!

Good luck, I am sure there are lots of extra BC's around somewhere. HenZ

This bird may very well be from "Wade Jeane lines". Once you get a few generations down the road, the original "line" doesn't really mean a whole lot any more.

The WJ line birds often seem to have too much red and/or not enough melanizers, which *may* be why your bird is showing that partridge-like barring in the wings. I wouldn't automatically assume that he's cross bred, just that somebody along the line wasn't practicing good selective breeding techniques!
