black copper marans

Two cockerels?

...I take back what I said about breeding them together... probably not the best idea I have had...

(I have never seen a cockerel with not color, I assumed it was a pullet)

thanks all for the answers. When they were younger, I was pretty sure they would be roos, but then. . . when the one started to copper out and the other didn't, I wondered. and the saddle feathers are not as pronounced on the blacker one.

I am bummed, out of seven, these two survived. I don't know where the others went. They were tucked away at night and in the AM gone. sigh.

in the words or Sienfeld's "egg nazi" No dark eggs for you! (at least not now)

Sorry to hear about the loss of your other birds.....as for these little boys......give them some time to finish feathering out and you may be pleasantly surprised.
How old are they?

This is my guy when he was mostly black last spring:

This is him now:

When it rains and he gets wet, the copper on his back and wings turns so dark it looks like he is almost all black again.

ETA: I know how your feel about "no dark eggs" I have tried twice for BCM's and got two roos. I recently have been mating him with my cuckoo hen and have three black pullets. Waiting to see if they will lay dark eggs.

what a difference a year makes.

what is the smaller black bird in the pic from a year ago?
he is adorable!

Thanks for posting your pictures.

That wasn't even a year ago - the first one was maybe in March, the second one was about a month ago. He will be a year old December 21st.

The little black bird was a pet quality serama and his best buddy - they were always together until the serama decided he was gonna beat up on my big guy (His name is Tank)

I sold him not long after that.

Unfortunately Tank is a subordinate roo to my showgirl and between molting and getting his tail feathers pulled he looks a little ragged right now. I'm gonna build him a seperate pen next spring so he can be king of his own domain.
