Black Copper Marans

Harleena, mosts of the Marans I've raised started laying at 6 to 7 months. Maybe her first laying period hit as winter started??????? Some hens don't lay well in winter.

If you even have winter in California????

It's easier to see these problems in the wheaten hens than in the wheaten cocks.

Look for very red hens, black feathers in the hackles, black "smuttiness" over all, things like that.

I have only BCM roosters running with my BCM, Barred Rock, Delaware, and Lackenvelder hens. I have only hatched the BCM eggs. Does anyone have experience of what I'll have if I hatched the cross eggs?

The only thing I can tell you about is one of those particular crosses is, the offspring from the Barred Rock hens will be sexlinked. Boys will be barred like their mothers and girls will be solid black. Barred Rock hens only pass the barring gene along to their male offspring, the males of this cross will hatch with a white spot on their heads and the girls will not. The boys will appear black upon hatch and not show any signs of barring until they start to feather out, in which case you will see the barring start in the wing feathers first of the males. You may or may not see some copper leaking through in the females as they mature but they should "should" stay black. Hope this helps and if I am wrong hopefully another great BYC'er will come by to set me straight.

Oh, what a relief this thread was for me! I was freaking out. I only had 5 BCM eggs to set along with my F1 olive eggers and some barnyard mix eggs. They hatched in order, so I was able to band each breed. BUT, only 2 of the 5 eggs hatched. The first was, you guessed it YELLOW! I thought, WTH!!!!??? The second is black. At least this makes me feel better and I don't feel like I was taken for a fool!

This is an interesting thread. I wonder what the status of the white chick is now and if the OP ever bred him back to see?

Here is my FBCM Cockeral. He is 15 weeks. He is from Wade Jean/Bev Davis and Cottage Hill lines. I think he has a little much color on the breasts but not sure. What do you think?
