I'm considering adding one/some to my mixed flock, but I don't know much about them. Can anyone share?

They are HUGE birds!

LOL just had to tell you that.
We had a beautiful new jersey giant black rooster, and he was BIG! Veru pretty, too. Roosters can become aggressive, but not as bad as some breeds, like the RIR. Lots of fluffy feathers. Not sure about the hen's personality, but roosters seem to be good family birds. Ours sometimes pecked us if we patted his chest, but he never really chased us. Like I said, BIG BIRDS!!!

Good for breeding. Personality:

*BIG!!!*
*fluffy.
*blacks have green/blue colored tail feathers, very pretty!
*friendly(depending on how you raise them).
*good family bird.
*good manners to hens.

I would recommend this breed to a lot of people. Hens lay large-X large brown eggs, and this breed is hardy through cold and warm seasons. Lays all through cold weather, too.(winter, fall...)

I wish we still had our jersey giant rooster. But a weasel got the gorgeous boy, along with his beloved hens.

But anyway, a very great breed!

I'll keep you posted

I have to say they are very calm & easy going so far!

I had two and now have one. They are a big bird and the APA lists them as the largest recognized breed of chicken. Hatchery birds will often be small than those coming from Breeders and especially SQ stock but they are still big nonetheless.

Giants are dual purpose birds. You can do better for eggs with Laying Breeds (like the Leghorns) and you can do better for meat with Meat Breeds (like the Cornish). So their feed-to-production ration isn't the best. Also, since they are so large they will take longer to mature and therefore take longer to start producing eggs.

I think the Black Giants are a pretty bird with the green sheen in the feathers. I find the ones I've got to be relatively mild-mannered.

I don't know what info you're looking for so I've tried to be of some help. Feel free to follow up if you have specific questons I haven't addressed. Overall, I would recommend you give them a try. I think you'll be pleased.

God Bless,

We just rehomed our gorgeous JG roo... He was just doing his roo thing, but it wasn't right for where we live (3 acre suburban area) and how we live (free range w/no boundary fences). He was AWESOME and protected the hens, but crowed all the time and challenged everyone when their back was turned away -even the 4 year olds.... I had a hard time letting him go, but another BYC member has him now and his roo thing is better there than it was at our place.

But he was indeed awesome -his looks were a show stopper!
