I had a batch of 10 spanish game fowl hatch about 8 weeks ago. A few days ago i noticed one of the chicks had an eye swollen shut, with black growths that look like worts on its leg. I did not want to risk anything so I culled the chick. Upon closer look at the remaining 9 they all have the black growths on their legs or comb and 2 have one eye sealed shut. A couple of them have an eye that seems to have a lot of mucus and may be on the way to swelling shut as well. I've seen a few of them scratching at there eye but other than that no noticeable behaviors. The mother of these chicks has no symptoms.

A separate hen of the same breed hatched 4 who are 7 weeks old and don't have any of these symptoms. I also have 15 other grown hens who have no symptoms.

Obviously I separated the chicks and have them in there own small coup, but I don't know what I should do. I don't know if its Coryza, or Mereks, or just a bad case of lice/mites/fleas. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I hate killing them but if it has to be done, it has to be done.

I would say its a fungus or mite issue.

Mareks is often called Alabama red leg, because the follicles turn red from swelling and feathers fall out. it also is called range paralysis and grey eye. The eye turns grey or the cornea becomes deformed. It often results in blindness.

Coryza is more respiratory and I havent read anything about black growths or warts. it causes bubbles in the eyes and wheezing among other symptoms.

here is a symptom checker. I really hope it helps!

Yea, I doubt it's Marek's. Maybe Pox? I''ve had several youngsters get a one eye shut thing and I put them on Tylan. But one I put on Penicillin shots for 5 days and the eye cleared up. I have no idea about the black growths. Can you get pictures?
