Ok, I have a young bird. 12 weeks. The bottoms of her feet are yellow.

I have read that they mature slowly. her comb and wattles have suddenly started getting redder and larger.

When did your roo show his true colors?

Thanks,

Tonya

Our JG hen started getting VERY red wattles and comb when she was around
12 or 13 weeks. She started laying around 14 weeks, 2 weeks earlier than the
leghorns. I think you would know if your bird was a roo by now.

Now at 8 months old she is no bigger than out other standards. I have a hard
time telling her apart from our Australorps. My understanding is she will be larger
eventually.

My Jersey Giants are bigger than my Buff Orpington, she is full grown, and they are 13 weeks old. They sure grow fast.
Maybe you are just going to have to wait till you see the pointed feathers or not

My JG was SO much bigger than all my birds until around 18 weeks. The rest caught
up with her or she slowed down. We'll see in 6 months how big she is.

Based on those pics I may have a roo. Were the combs and wattles always red or did they just POP up?

But from what PC says I may have a hen that is getting ready!!!

PC- My 2 black ones (I think that oneis an Australorp and other JG) have always been bossy and looking around when I drop something. But I have 2 other roos that got red very early and so I just thought they were bossy/confused hens. Now I am not so sure about the one.

I guess I will know in a few weeks one way or another.

Thanks!

My Jerseys seem to take forever to mature. I have one outside now that was hatched in September, and he's still small. At least now I can tell he's a he! His comb and wattles are still small, but he's obviously male. All mine stay small for a long time, and then it's like *poof!* I wake up one day and they're all bigger than the other birds. My hens took a long time before they started laying compared to my other standards. My hens are as big as my EE roos!
