hello all!

I was looking at some nice white egg laying breeds to join the list of breeds I want and I saw these Black minorcas?!? Does anyone know what they are like... are they friendly? Calm? How are they with other breeds and birds?

I've raised white minorcas and liked them. However, they are a Mediterranean breed and so are a bit on the skittish side - like all the Med breeds I've raised. That said, I don't handle my birds and don't care if they are aloof. Many other people who handle their birds more will have a different experience.
Minorcas come in black, white and blue. Blacks are most common and the largest of the 3 and the largest of all Mediterranean breeds. Huge white eggs.
Other white egg breeds I like are Anconas, Jaerhons, White Face Black Spanish and Leghorns.

Thanks for the info

How are they with the cold, being from the Mediterranean? Here in England we don’t really get a lot of snow, mainly icy winds, frost and cold rain

It has gotten down to -19F/-28C here with plenty of snow and I've never lost a Mediterranean breed to cold. Some of the roosters get frostbitten combs and wattles though. I keep my coops wide open with huge windows and the hens have never been negatively affected.
Jaerhons are champs at handling extreme cold and heat. It can get to 43C here. Their eggs are a fair size for the size of the bird. being small, they are nearly as thrifty as Leghorns in feed conversion.

Thanks, our wheather isn’t that extreme, infact, early winter, autumn and early spring are all very similar in terms of wheather it’s only summer and late winter where it gets bad. But as long as I put out plenty of water and a shade in summer and feed corn and give plenty of bedding in winter they should be fine.
