Are they a problem? I have a couple in the back yard that I have left alone to deal with mice/rats but I'm not sure if they are going to be an issue. I have 4 week old chicks that have not been bothered, but I'm wondering about eggs.

Yes, black snakes will eat eggs and bigger ones can manage young chickens. Your best bet is to leave the snakes alone because they will keep other critters at bay but snake-proof your coop.

Snake proof your coop...

Now my coop is 12*24*8 with plywood or hardi-cloth of 1/4*1/4 inch - the largest gap I can find is 1/4*1/2 inch- but I had a pine snake...

So far for me snake proofing a coop is kinda like --- dust proofing my A/C or dirt proofing my floor--- it would be nice, but it seems impossible... I swear those things are actually liquid.
