Hey y’all I raise quail and chickens. When I clean out the quail dropping trays they are full of BLSF larvae. I was wondering If I could take this larvae are feed it to my chickens. Would I have to wash it off because it was living in the quail poo? What is the procedure to get the larvae ready for chickens consumption?

Yes you can. The procedure is to feed them. Wash if desired, not required.

BSFL are high protein (also high fat, sadly), but feeding them live, there is high water content, which should cut down on gorging. Still, better than BOSS. Mineral content of the exoskeleton is superior, too.

Keep quantities "reasonable". Dried, they are treats - not more than 10% of the daily feed ration by weight. About a level Tbsp per chicken. Live, due to water content, you can feed more, roughly 3x that.

that's what BYC is for.

Wish I could get some BSFL production going on my property, this is the second year I've tried w/o success. Too hot in the summer in my black plastic composter, haven't found the right mix of ingredients to make it attractive to them, either.
BSFL like my too-wet compost tumblers, full of food scraps, coffee grinds, and quail poop, if that helps. Very little yard waste.
