Black soldier fly larvae

This is fascinating!! We’ve never had them before and now I’m so glad we do!! I had noticed that the compost pile was decomposing at a MUCH faster rate than ever before. We actually are working on a set up where we open a door in the chicken run and allow the chickens to just “free range” so to speak in the compost pile. I think I may go dig up a shovel of them and throw them on our other bigger pile and see how fast they can tear it down! Wow!

I've never heard or seen anything about black soldier flies/larvae before but got curious and found this

Actually, holy moley people do this pretty successfully with super easy plastic tote set-ups. Just add a ramp and some little drop down for the larvae to fall into after climbing the ramp and bam, chicken snacks!

BSF are awesome. Protein packed, chickens love them. They help with composting, as I'm not very good at keeping the pile hot. A lot of times if you have a concrete block, or something of that nature, in your chicken coop or run the BSF larvae will be under that. They love the chicken manure and food if it gets wet.
