Hey! I've got some questions!!! I was feeding my girls last night and collected eggs and noticed that almost all 11 of my hens and my 2 roosters has black specks on their combs. It was very cold a few weeks ago but the pictures I have seen of frostbite don't look like what they have. I was going to see if any of you knew what this was! Thank you! Those same black specks depicted in your photos have appeared on my roosters combs from time to time, yet in the over ten years I've been keeping chickens, I haven't been able to determine exactly what they are or what causes them.

I suspect some sort of fungus or bacteria since they respond to Blu-kote. Dabbing the blue stuff on the black spots has always helped to clear them up.

Blu-kote cleared it up? I have a ton of that stuff... has it ever gotten on your hens? Almost all of my hens have it but they are doing fine as far as eating and laying.

Blu-kote cleared it up and it didn't come back. Mostly it was my roosters that got it, as I recall, but I see no reason why hens' combs should be immune from whatever the stuff is.
