Mustang, Ok
My chicken lays black stained eggs. She hasn't always done this - just started when the mulberries peaked this season. She doesn't get many, only a few make it into the yard, but that's the only thing I can think of that would do this to her eggs. Does anyone else have any ideas? We've ruled out internal parasites, by the way. I know eggs rotate as they go thru the "shoot", but end over end? She's the only one of the 5 that does this. We cracked open the other eggs

to make sure all was well inside - it was:)

I've had this happen a few times usually like right now that its peak mulberry season, some hens will lay stained eggs and others won't, and there are two different tubes one for eggs and the other for poop even though it all comes out the single vent the best way i can think to compare it to is an esophagus in humans it branchs into two separte tubes one goes the lungs and the other tube to the stomach and the muscles that open and close each tube. Same goes for a chicken and there is nothing wrong with the eggs just like all eggs wash and use. Hope this helps

So, if I understand you correctly, the black staining is residue left behind from mulberry poo? Lovely

Well...it'll wash. Like we always tell the kids: It's what's inside that counts

Thanks for the information!
