Black thing growing on rooster's foot

My mother-in-law has a mixed breed bantam rooster that is 6 years old. He has a black growth growing on his foot. About 1 or 2 months ago, she cut it off and doctored it. At that time, it was over an inch long, and about as round as your thumb, maybe a little smaller, and hard as a rock. It was on his foot, not his leg. After she cut it off, it has grown back to be about 3/4 inch long. She doesn't know what else to do. She is giving him two weeks, and if he isn't doing better, she will put him down.

Does anyone have any idea of what it is and what she can do to help him?

Could be bumblefoot. Do a key-word search, read some threads and see some pictures of it, then come back here and let us know if it sounds/looks like the same thing.

It is on the top of his foot.
