Rooster foot pad problems

My rooster has limped off and on for several months. I have checked his foot a couple times and never noticed anything obvious. Someone once said their rooster would hurt their ankles when mounting the hens. I figured that’s what it was.

But the other day he must have cut himself and I saw some blood on the ground and he was limping again. I checked his feet and noticed no obvious injuries but I did notice his one foot pad is much larger than the other. Of course this is the problematic foot. Doesn’t look like bumble foot.

I’ll have to try and get better photos when he is less flappy. But any advice would be helpful. I would rather avoid another rooster vet bill.

I can’t tell much from those photos but I do see what could be a dark spot under his first toe on that foot. If you don’t see anything and the swelling is only in the foot pad, it could be a staff infection that hasn’t yet surfaced. I use Ichthamamol once daily for a few days if I suspect something is down there and it will usually draw something up pretty quickly if that’s the issue. If you’re sure the blood came from him, though, then bumblefoot wouldn’t make much sense.

It sounds to me more like an injury to his leg. Swelling can develop in the whole foot even if the injury is higher up. I would check to make sure it feels like nothing is dislocated or broken in which case you may need a vet. Usually giving them an opportunity to rest can be enough to help heal something lesser like a sprain, though. There are a few articles about “chicken chairs” on here that allow them to keep weight off of those healing injuries. I would definitely try that for a few sessions and see if that aids any improvement.

Here are some better photos (kinda). I tried to clean his foot off some but it’s hard when you’re by yourself holding a rooster, trying not to get attacked by the small rooster, trying to take a photo, etc etc 😆
